“It’s sad but good.” Kat snuggled against his chest. “I just like it.”

“Can’t we watch a romance for once? You have the strangest taste in movies.”

Kat set her chin on his chest and gazed up at him. “Do you like romances?”

“Depends on the movie, but no, I mostly like them because they tend to lead to more interesting activities when you’re, say, with a beautiful woman.” Nex smirked, and Kat nudged him in the side. “What about a horror movie?”

“Ew, no.” Kat shuddered. “They’re too scary. I watched one with Frida in high school, and I amneverwatching one again.”

“What did you watch with Frida?”

“I don’t remember the name. A little boy sees dead people.”

“A little boy sees dea— Are you fucking kidding me?Thatmovie scared you? You’ve never watched any other horror movies except that one?”

“No.” Kat wrinkled her nose. “I don’t like being scared. I don’t understand why people enjoy scary movies. Being scared isn’t fun.”

“That movie isn’t even—” He gave up, considering it unlikely she’d agree the movie wasn’t scary. “It’s no wonder you didn’t realize you were summoning a demon. That’s really the only horror movie you’ve ever watched?”

“I mean, I saw bits and pieces of other movies, and sometimes I saw previews but never fully watched another one.”

“I can’t believe of all the movies, that one scared you.”

Kat shrugged. “I scare easy.”

Nex raised an eyebrow. “You scare easy?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“That’s bullshit.”

Kat lifted her head and frowned. “How would you know?”

“Maybe because I’m ademon, and the first thing you did was hit me on the head with an umbrella.”

“Oh, I was definitely scared. You can be scared and still defend yourself. Also, it hadn’t registered that you were a demon. I thought you were a crazy person.”

“Well, now you know.” He twirled one of her curls around his finger. “You’re brave enough to defy a demon, fuck and sleep with him every night, and stand up to someone like Lilith, but somehow you’re not brave enough to watch a scary movie?”

“First of all,” Kat held up a finger, “part of the reason scary movies are so scary is because you can’t control what happens, and everyone in scary movies is stupid and lacks basic common sense. I mean, why is there always a girl running around completely naked when sheknowsthere’s a killer on the loose? I haven’t seen much, but I know that happens a lot.” She shook her head. “And second, you’re not scary.”

“Obviously those scenes exist for the boobs, and—” He scowled. “What did you say?”

Kat folded her arms over his chest and rested her chin on her hands. “Which part?”

He clenched his jaw. “About me not being scary.”

She shrugged. “You’re not.”

“I’m terrifying.” Nex growled.

Under Nex’s increasingly unhappy glare, Kat stifled a laugh and dropped her head in her arms to control it. “Um, okay.” She pressed her lips together to hold back the smile. “You’re terrifying.”

“You don’t think I’m scary?”

“I think you’re adorable.”

“I amnotadorable,” Nex snapped, his eyes turning red.
