“It wasn’t your fault.” Kat stroked his face. Nex opened his eyes to look into hers, giving her a pained expression. “It wasn’t.” Kat kissed him, then hugged him.

Silence in the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the endless stream of thoughts and fears bouncing around both their minds. Nex wasn’t ready to stop hugging her, but he had angels to deal with. That and Kat shivered, reminding him she needed to warm up. He turned on the shower, making it hot like she enjoyed, before gripping the hem of her shirt.

“What’s so wrong about us being together?” she asked.

“Demons aren’t meant to be with humans.” He tugged her shirt off. “We’re meant to stay in our realm and not bother humans unless we’re ordered to. They don’t like us meddling with people andtaintingtheir souls.”

“You aren’t tainting me. I want you here. Doesn’t that count for anything?”

“Apparently not.” Nex pulled off his shirt, then gave her a gentle kiss. “I’m going to fix this. If they think they can take you from me, they have another thing coming.”

“I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“Don’t worry about me, Katherine.” He nuzzled her neck and breathed in her scent—vanilla and pear. “I have a few tricks up my sleeve.”

Nex undressed them and stepped into the shower with Kat, holding her close as hot water cascaded over them. He drifted his hand up and down her back. Often, washing her led to something fun, but that was far from his mind. He wanted her warm and relaxed enough to sleep.

When the water ran cold, they dried off. Kat slipped on leggings and opted for one of Nex’s long-sleeve shirts, which almost reached her knees. They climbed onto the bed, and Nex held her against him, running his hand through her hair, gaze fixed over her shoulder out the window where his fellow demons were arriving.

Kat’s hands fisted in his shirt, her eyes wide open.

His chest clenched, and he tilted her chin up. “Sleep, my angel.” He brushed his lips along hers. “I’m here. No one can touch you.”

“How are you planning to fix it?”

“Let me worry about that.”

“Last time I let you worry about taking care of something, Lilith showed up.” Kat blanched and cuddled closer. “What are you going to do?”

“Have a chat with Gabriel. Explain the situation and make an appeal. Don’t worry yourself over it. You’ve been through enough for one night.”

“Would it help if I talked to him too?”

“I’m afraid this needs to come from me. I’m the one breaking the rules you didn’t know existed. I created the problem, and I’ll fix it.”

“Don’t get hurt,” Kat whispered, tightening her hands in his shirt. “Please don’t do anything where you could get hurt.”

“I’ll be fine.” Nex rested his head on hers. “Sleep with me for now.”

He nestled the blankets snugly around her. It took longer than usual for her to fall asleep, but once she did, he carefully untangled himself from her, then stared down at her sleeping form. Red hair spread over the sheets, her eyelashes fanned her cheeks, and her hands reached for the place he’d occupied. She found a pillow and tugged it to her chest.

Nex bent and kissed her forehead, brushing his fingers over her freckle-covered cheek. He only allowed himself a moment to admire her, then stalked outside.

The wind whipped around him and his fellow demons in Kat’s backyard, but the snow melted before it reached him. Anger blazed through his veins, and each step melted more snow.

“I need several guards to stay with her,” Nex said. “The rest of you, come with me.” He changed into his demon form, eyes glowing brighter red than usual. “We have an angel to visit.”

Chapter 38

Unforgivable

Melchizedekreturnedtothechurch and found Gabriel lying across a pew, tossing and catching a ball of light. He smacked the light from Gabriel’s hand. It bounced down the aisle and faded.

“You weren’t supposed to act until I returned,” Melchizedek gritted out. “Yet, I hear a demon was released.”

“What?” Gabriel sat up. “I did not release a demon. I told you I would wait, and I did.”

“Then what happened? The mark I placed on her was tracked.” Melchizedek crossed his arms. “I felt it happen.”
