Nex’s arms dropped to his sides, and he stared down at her delicate hands clasped over his stomach.I could’ve lost her. I could’ve never seen her again. The memory of her scream pierced his soul, and he couldn’t take it. He needed to be close to her. Turning in her arms, he dragged her into a hard kiss. She squealed in surprise—something he loved to get out of her.Thatwas the sound he wanted to hear. Not her terrified scream.
He couldn’t say enough how sorry he was. The sincerity of his regrets poured into his kiss, and he sought out her tongue, kissing her hard enough her lips would be swollen. Seeing them swollen from his attention drove him crazy. Moaning into the kiss, Kat slid her hands into his hair. Nex groaned and slipped his hands under the shirt of his she had on.
“Fuck, I need you.” He hooked his fingers in her leggings. “Ineedyou.” He tugged her leggings and underwear down in one swift motion, lifted her onto the counter, spread her legs, and dove under her shirt, craving her taste. Kat gasped when his tongue swept over the ache he’d created. Her fingers curled in his hair, tightening in it as she threw her head back and moaned.
He moved his lips and tongue over her clit in a rhythmic pattern until she came, shuddering around his face. While she trembled from the remnants of her orgasm, he stood and traced the outline of her jaw. “I need to have you.”
“Then have me.” She pressed her hands against his chest and gazed up at him. “I’m yours.”
Nex groaned and tugged his pants down enough to let himself out. He moved between her legs and positioned himself at her hot, waiting core. They both released a moan as he slid into her and stayed deep inside. Kat held his face and pulled him into another kiss.
“I’ll give you points for passion. I wasn’t expecting the show, but I’ll gladly take it.”
Ice replaced the raging fire inside, freezing them in place. Nex peeked over his shoulder at Lilith near the back door. He pulled out of Kat and yanked his pants up as Kat tugged the shirt she was wearing further down her legs. Kat might’ve been embarrassed if her hands weren’t shaking so bad.
“Don’t stop on my account.” Lilith gestured for them to continue. “You may as well fuck her. You might not get another opportunity after I’m done with you.”
Nex helped Kat off the counter and ushered her behind him. “The angels called you, I suppose. I thought you didn’t answer to them.”
“I’m not here because of the angels. Uriel may have come to me, but I knew what happened. You know I don’t fucking answer to them. I’m here because ofyou.” She growled, stalking toward them.
Nex reached out for the demons who’d been there since the bridge incident, but he was blocked. He scowled.Lilith.
“Don’t bother. They’re on their knees. They made me force them to stand down. I was already pissed, Nex.” She bared her teeth. “Now I’mreallyfucking pissed. I had to use my powers to make my own soldiers submit.”
“If you’re not here because of the angels, then why are you here?” Nex asked, backing him and Katherine away.
“Why am I here?” Lilith seethed. “Because one of my high-ranked soldiers had a fucking angel killed. Anangel. What the fuck were you thinking? Do you know how bad that makes me look?” Her claws grew longer, her voice disembodied. “It makes it look like I have no control over my damn demons. You were on the brink of causing inflation in this stupid fucking human realm, but you’ve made a bigger mess that makes me look like a shitty leader. It makes the angels think we need better regulation, need more of their involvement. I’m done giving you chances.” Her eyes turned solid black. “Now, you pay for it.”
The moment she said the words, shadows snatched Kat and dragged her to Lilith. Nex lunged for her, but Lilith shoved him, and he fell to the floor.
“Don’t hurt her.” Nex jumped up and darted forward. “Don’t you dare hurt her!”
“What are you going to do about it?” Lilith tilted her head and flicked her wrist. Kat was jerked to the demon’s side, suspended in the air. “Long time no see, sweetness. Nex has certainly been fucking you good, hasn’t he?”
Nex charged at Lilith. She rolled her eyes, and the second he reached her, his eyes widened. Time slowed, but only for him. Lilith clutched him by his hair, an invisible force drove him to his knees, and Lilith wrenched his head back to make him look up at her.
“Don’t be naïve. You think I’m going to stroll in here, kill you both, and leave it at that?” She cackled, the sound grating on Kat and Nex’s ears like a physical invasion. “No, you no longer get the luxury of a quick death. I’m going to make yousuffer. I’m going to break your spirit and shatter your soul. I’m going to separate you in a way that crushes you both so you don’teverthink about putting me in this position again.”
“Nex!” Kat screamed as Lilith released his hair, and his head slumped to the ground.
“Since you’ve abused your powers, you no longer get to have them unless they’re for the purpose you came here to serve.” Black tendrils coiled around Nex’s throat, cutting off his oxygen. “Your powers are gone. Your demon guards are gone. I am forcing them all back to the underworld until this shit is over. You’re as vulnerable as a mortal and just as easy to kill. The only time your powers will return is if your beloved human gives you a name, and you’ll only be able to use them on that target. Then, when you return to the underworld,” Lilith’s teeth grew to sharp points, “mark my words, Nex, you willneverleave that realm. And you will never see your precious human again. Good luck protecting her when you have nothing to protect her with.”
Chapter 40
Love Always Perseveres
Nexpeeredoutthewindow as if that would help when someone came for them. He was more vulnerable than he’d ever been. Basic senses were missing. He couldn’t hear as well, couldn’t move as fast, wasn’t as strong, couldn’t smell as well. He didn’t realize how terrible human senses were compared to what he was used to.
Regardless, every sound put him on edge. He’d done nothing but keep watch since Lilith’s threat. The combination of sleep deprivation and the stress of what might happen made him short-tempered, which was why Kat opted to sit in another room while he moved between the windows.
A small creak in the floorboard—not enough to mean anything but enough to make Nex anxious—sounded from their bedroom, and he rushed in. Kat knelt on the floor in front of the bed with her hands together, eyes closed, murmuring so quietly he couldn’t make out what she said.
Nex’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t tell me you’re doing what I think you’re doing.”
“I’m not asking you to do it with me,” Kat said calmly and continued murmuring.
“You think any higher power is going to help us?”
