“I know.” Nex nudged her nose with his. “Please, don’t leave my side tomorrow. For any reason.”

“I won’t. Promise.” Kat curled her fingers in his hair. “Now, we should stop fighting and enjoy each other while we can.”

She kissed him, and Nex groaned in surprise when she guided them to the couch. The back of his knees hit the edge, and he sat in the very spot where he’d kissed her for the first time. “Katherine.” Her name on his lips was a breathless whisper, plea, and worship all at once.

She hooked her fingers in her leggings and underwear and tugged them off, leaving her in nothing except his shirt.

“Look at you, my angel, seducing me instead of the other way around.” He leaned forward and snatched her wrists. “Get over here.”

She straddled his lap, and he pulled her into a kiss. “Nex,” she murmured when his hand slid under her shirt and between her legs.

“This what you want, my Katherine?” His lips brushed her neck while his fingers danced along her inner thighs. “You want me to touch you? Enjoy you?”

Kat shut her eyes and focused on the sensations of his lips and hands. “Yes.”

His fingers moved over her in a way that had her whimpering. She craved to be close to him for every moment she could, and that craving intensified when his fingers slipped inside her. She moaned and rolled her hips against his hand until she was right on the edge of a release, but he stopped. Kat whimpered in protest, and he dragged her lips to his.

“I want you to finish with me.” He reached between them and pulled himself out of his pants.

Kat stared down at his hardness and bit her lip. “I don’t know how to do it.”

“Let your instincts take over. Do what feels good.”

Kat closed her eyes and shifted her hips down, gasping as he sank into her. Nex groaned and gripped her hips, pulling her down harder, pushing himself deeper.

“Nex.” Lips parted, Kat clutched his shoulders. She lifted her hips until he was almost out, then sank back down and moaned at the new sensations in this position. “That feels good.” She squeezed her eyes shut as he thrust up into her and pulled her hips down. “Does it feel good for you?”

“Katherine, my love, I’minsideyou.” Breathless, he stared into the green eyes that would always be home to him, no matter where they ended up. “There are few things you could do to make this anything less than fucking amazing. Do what feels good. Trust me; it feels more than good for me.”

Kat moved up and down, rolling her hips and crying out when she found a rhythm. Nex’s fingers dug into her hips, letting her lead and moving with her, thrusting deep each time she made a new sound of ecstasy.

They moved together like souls who’d always known each other. All the stress from the past several days poured into that moment, which, for all they knew, could be their last time together. Each movement, touch, and kiss was an attempt to etch every detail of one another into their memory—the sound of their voice, the touch of their skin, the brush of their lips. It was more intimate than any other time because this was more. It was a promise to never forget what it felt like to love each other, even if they were apart.

They grew closer to bursting, and Kat’s head dropped against Nex’s shoulder, but he tugged it back and kissed her. He held her in that kiss as the muffled moans from them finishing broke their mouths apart. They reconnected during and after, every touch a treasured moment.

“I love you,” Nex whispered. He opened his eyes to look into hers, scanning every inch of their beautiful shape and color.

“I love you too.” Kat stared back for a moment before she hugged him. Not caring how strange the timing might be, she sent another prayer as she clung to Nex, remembering the verse in her Bible about love:

“It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Chapter 41

Find a Way

Nexstoodontheporch of Katherine’s house and checked the street for the fifth time while she welcomed Jeremiah inside. Logically, he understood they weren’t in more danger outside the house. It didn’t stop his hands flexing or his stomach knotting.

Kat stepped outside, putting on her gloves. “Ready?”

He focused on her lovely smile to conjure one of his own. Wrapping an arm around her waist, he kept her close on the walk to the garage. Kat would never get to the point where driving a car was possible if she couldn’t stand to ride in anything other than the bus, so Nex offered to drive. The elementary school they were donating supplies and lunches to was in a poorer part of the city and too far to walk.

Nex was certain something terrible would happen in the car on the drive. Lilith had a dark sense of humor; she would tamper with the engine and kill Katherine in a car accident after she’d already survived one. Nex gripped Kat’s hand and monitored the road, examining each car and stop. A sigh escaped when he had the car parked safely in the school lot. It might’ve been the first time he was more tense in a vehicle than Kat was. They got out, and he was at her side in an instant.

She stood on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek. “It’s okay.”

“I should be the one saying that to you.”

He dropped the car keys into her hand, and she stowed them in her purse. The lot overflowed with vans loaded with supplies, and church people who Kat greeted.
