Kat assessed the room as if it could provide a hint about last night. “Well, how did I end up . . .”

“Asleep on top of me?” Nex finished, quite amused. “I carried you because you were too drunk to walk. When we got in bed, you asked me to kiss you on the neck again.”

“I did not!” Kat hid her face in her hands.

“Of the two of us, I’m the one who remembers what happened.” Nex pressed his lips together in a failed attempt at hiding a smile. “Don’t be embarrassed. In any other circumstance, I would’ve kissed more than your neck. By the way, I didn’t know you could sing so well.”

“Oh no.” Kat winced. “Karaoke?”

“A lot of karaoke. Why didn’t you sing for your audition? If they heard your voice, the stuttering wouldn’t have mattered.”

“I don’t like singing in front of people unless it’s in a group. You haven’t answered how I ended up on top of you.”

Nex snorted. “That’s silly. You have an incredible voice. Anyway, you wanted to try kissing my neck after I kissed yours, so you climbed on top of me. It didn’t last long. You passed out.”

“Oh my God.” Kat pulled on her hair.

“Relax, kitten.” Nex removed her hands from her hair. “I’m not complaining. Want to try again now that you’re sober?” He brushed his hand against her thigh. “I’ll kiss more than your neck. I’ll kiss where that ache keeps building.”

The sensation of his fingers on her thigh sent excitement right between her legs. Kat stiffened. Never had she struggled with self-control. It was terrifying.

“No!” Kat pulled away and climbed out of bed. The headache grew with the movement, and she pressed her fingers to her temples.

In the living room, she found Frida passed out on the couch. Kat returned to her room and grabbed clothes, temporarily letting go of her throbbing head to glare at Nex. “I’m taking a shower, and you’renotgoing to appear in there.”

“Very well. I understand. Don’t want to have your first time in the shower.”

“I hate you.” Kat stormed to the bathroom.

The door closed, and she was alone, but Nex’s voice echoed in her head. You don’t hate me. You hate that you want me.

Kat’s eyes widened, and she glanced around to ensure he wasn’t in the room. “What?”

Another trick I possess. I have many very fun tricks. You’ll see.

Kat’s body thrummed with an awareness that she attempted to wash away in a quick shower. Trusting Nex to keep his word was unwise. A sigh escaped when she walked out fully dressed without him showing up, but she was surprised to find him in the kitchen. Cooking.

Kat sat next to Frida, reminding herself that in Frida’s eyes, this was supposed to be normal. Nex hadn’t put on a shirt, and Kat forced her gaze to the table.

“Seriously, he’s hot, andhe cooks?” Frida pretend-swooned. “You won the lottery with this one.”

Kat opened her mouth, but Nex was suddenly beside her, setting down a smoothie. “A cure for your hangover, kitten.” He placed a kiss on her head. “Don’t worry. It has your yogurt in it.”

Frida mouthedOh my Godand made dreamy eyes at Nex while Kat glared at the smoothie. As he cooked, Nex entertained Frida with small talk and jokes. Kat stabbed at her eggs, but Frida was too distracted to notice.

Once they were finished, Frida had to leave for her next destination. They walked outside with her, Nex still not bothering to put on a shirt. His bare torso attracted attention from the neighbors. Kat flushed and avoided looking at him. Instead, she gave Frida a long hug. Frida also embraced a stiff Nex before leaving, waving as she drove away.

Kat’s elderly, conservative neighbor looked over. A neighbor who went to Kat’s church. A neighbor who peered at Nex in his boxers questioningly.

Kat grabbed his arm, dragged him inside, and slammed the door. “Dude, what the heck? Put on a shirt, for goodness’ sake. My whole church is going to think you live with me.”

Nex laughed, wiping nonexistent tears. “Oh no, kitten, whatever will they do? Come and pray over you? I hope there’s enough power in their prayers to save your soul because living with a demon isn’t earning you points with anyone upstairs.” He pointed up. “Although, your incredible lack of curse words might. ‘What the heck?’ Are you that afraid of hell?”

“That’s it.” Kat ground her teeth. “You’re not staying with me anymore. You can make money, so find somewhere else to live.”

“I’m not going anywhere.” Nex invaded her space. “You’ve trapped me in this awful realm, and you’re going to help me get out, or I’ll keep doing this and many other things to make your life hard. Cooperate with me, and I’ll cooperate with you. It’s that simple.”

“You have a physical form now. I can call the police, and they’ll be able to see you.”
