He tilted his head to the side. “With what phone?”

Kat dropped her hands to her sides and lifted her chin. “I don’t need a phone. The police station isn’t far.” She opened the front door, but it slammed shut.

Nex pinned her wrists behind her back, pushing her chest into the door. Her breath caught when he pressed his body against hers. Kat tried to pull her wrists out of his hold, but he squeezed tighter. A jolt of excitement went through her, and she reminded herself that was a bad thing.

“I don’t think so, kitten.” Nex nuzzled her hair. “Remember, I can disappear. How bad would it look if they came here again, and you had nothing to show for it?”

“You’ve made your point.” Kat breathed, trying to ignore the warmth rippling through her body. “Let me go.”

His hold on her wrists constricted. “Why? Because you like this too much?”

“I have class,” Kat said weakly.

Nex chuckled and nipped her ear before releasing her, stepping far enough back that Kat could turn but not without bumping into him. “What a convenient excuse.”

Kat pushed away, gathered her things, and bolted out the door. Half expecting him to follow, she repeatedly checked behind her but didn’t see him.

Focusing in class was difficult. The throbbing between her legs ached unlike anything she’d ever experienced. A couple of guys had caught her interest over the years, but she was too shy to do anything about it. And while her church was different, sex was still a weird subject, so she never explored that part of herself. Although, she’d be lying if she said she hadn’t thought about it. Nex was right when he said she’d never felt her own touch. For the first time, she considered investigating it.

She pressed her thighs together and shut out those thoughts. She gave him too much control, and he enjoyed it too much.Be stronger. Don’t let him affect you. Having thoughts like that for a demon concerned her. Maybe she needed therapy.

Class ended, and Kat had barely listened to a word. She needed to find something to get rid of Nex. After gathering her things, she rushed outside and turned for the library.

“Kat,” Jason called from behind.

She spun and tried not to blush. Nex brought out a lot of new feelings, but she still had a crush on Jason. “Hi.” She clutched her notebook to her chest.

“Hey, I meant to catch you yesterday after auditions, but you bailed pretty fast.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets. “Sorry you didn’t get the part you wanted.”

“It’s okay.” Kat shrugged, darting her eyes away.

“For the record, I think you would’ve made a much better Constance.”

Kat’s eyes snapped back to him, and a smile crept across her face. “Thanks.”

“So, listen, I was wondering . . . Do you wanna have dinner with me?”

Kat blinked, not sure she heard correctly. He waited for an answer, and she reminded herself she needed to speak. “Dinner with you? Like a . . .”

“A date? Yeah, that’s what I was hoping.”

Kat tucked a curl behind her ear and tried not to smile too wide. “I’d like that.”

“Great.” Jason beamed. “Can I get your number, and we’ll make a plan?”

Kat hesitated. How could she explain that Nex had shattered her phone? “I’m out of a phone right now. It broke, but I’m on social media. You can message me there. I’m on my computer a lot.”

“I can do that.”

“My last name’s—”

“I know your last name, Kat.” Jason smiled. “I may have looked at your profile a few times.”

Kat pretended to have an itch on her face to hide the growing smile. “Oh.”

“Couldn’t help it. You’re too gorgeous.” He winked. “Let’s make a plan now. What about Friday night at seven? I can pick you up?”

“Okay.”
