“Great.” Jason pulled out his phone. “I’ll send you a friend request, and you send me your address, yeah?”
Kat nodded, rocking on her heels to keep from bouncing.
Jason grinned, touching her arm as he moved past her. “See you Friday.”
Once Kat was confident he wouldn’t hear or see, she squealed and jumped up and down. She was so distracted that she didn’t notice Nex leaning against the wall with eyes too red to pass as normal.
Chapter 9
No More Playing Nice
WhenKatarrivedhome,Nex appeared in front of her. She screamed, setting her hand on her chest. “Stop doing that! You’re going to put me in an early grave.” She dropped her bag on her way to the kitchen.
Nex followed close behind. “How was class?”
“Fine.” Kat poured some water, glancing back at him.Why the sudden interest in my life?
“Fine? Nothing noteworthy?”
“I did go to the library. Found some stuff.” Kat sipped her water. “It all sounds insane, but so does accidentally summoning a demon.”
“That’s it? Nothing else you want to say to me?”
Brows knit together, Kat tapped against her glass with her thumb. “No . . . Oh! Actually, yes.” She put her water down and placed her hands on her hips. “I have to go out again because, thanks to you, I have no phone and no alarm clock. Besides not popping up in my face out of nowhere, can you maybe also not break my things? As you pointed out, I work at a bookstore. I’m not made of money.”
“I replaced your alarm clock and bought you a new phone.” He pulled a phone from his pocket. “It’s better than the last.”
Kat arched her eyebrows, cautiously accepting the phone. “Thanks.”
“No more then? Your day was average and normal?”
The phone reminded Kat of her date on Friday. It wasn’t that she forgot; she was distracted by finding ways to undo summoning Nex. She fiddled with her phone. They shared some weird moments, but he did say it was to mess with her, and it wasn’t as if she’d be able to avoid telling him when Jason showed up. Unable to contain the smile, Kat’s voice raised a couple of octaves. “Jason asked me out.”
“Did he?” Nex inched closer. “And what did you say?”
“Yes, obviously. I’ve wanted to go out with him for over a year.”
Nex’s eyes grew redder. “Don’t you think it’ll put a damper on things when he finds out you sleep with another man?”
Kat cocked her head. “Are you mad?”
“Why would I be mad?” Nex scoffed. “You’re nothing to me. I just don’t understand why you’d date someone who obviously only wants to fuck you. Not very virginal of you.”
“Why are you being mean?” She tugged on her sleeves. “That’s not why he asked me. He’s not like you. He’s sweet.”
Nex laughed. “Bullshit. You’re so fucking naïve it’s painful. He’s a douchebag who wants to get in your pants, and when he does, that’ll be it. You know everyone wants to fuck a ginger to see what it’s like, right?”
“Stop it.” Kat backed away. “Stop being so mean. I don’t see how it’s your business anyway. I’m hopefully getting you out of here like you wanted.”
“Your stupid research and loopholes are a waste of time.” Nex glowered. “Maybe this is for the best. When he does fuck you and leave you, you can give me his name to kill, and I can go home.”
“I don’t know why you’re mad. Are you jealous? You told me everything you’ve done is to mess with me. You can’t be jealous if you’re messing with me.”
“I’m not jealous. If I wanted you, I could get you.” He gripped her hips and hauled her against him. “Your buttons are so easy to push, I could have you spreading your legs for me within the hour. It’s a miracle you’re still a virgin with how I have you aching for me.”
A lump formed in her throat, but she wouldn’t give him the benefit. She pushed him away and opened the fridge.
“The silent treatment.” Nex sighed dramatically. “Nothing has ever hurt so much.”
