Kat hesitated but gave in. She placed the spoon in her mouth and flushed as Nex watched her. “What?” She slid the spoon out of her mouth and focused on the bookshelf in the corner.
“Have you kissed anyone before?”
The heat in Kat’s face and chest intensified, which was answer enough. She turned to leave, but Nex grabbed her hand and pulled her down on his lap, straddling him. Her dress slid partway up her thighs, leaving her leggings and his sweats the only cover between them.
Kat squeaked, setting her hands on his chest for balance. His bare chest. “What are you doing?” The contact had her licking her lips.
“What if he tries to kiss you?”
“I don’t know. I don’t know how.”
Nex smiled lightly and brought his hand behind her head, leaning so close their noses touched.
Kat’s breath hitched. “What are you doing?”
“I can teach you before he gets here.” Nex’s other hand slid to her lower back and dragged her against him. “You want your first kiss with him to go well, don’t you?”
“Yes.” Her body tingled when Nex’s hand drifted up and down her spine.
“Then pay attention.” Nex grabbed her wrists, placed her hands behind his head, and pulled her into a kiss.
Kat tensed, but his lips were surprisingly warm and gentle. The motion had her eyes fluttering shut. He moved slowly, threading his fingers through her hair to hold her in the kiss. Kat responded, mimicking his movement. It wasn’t long, but when they broke apart, Kat was breathless.
“Um.” Kat opened her eyes, and her fingers curled against his skin. “Thanks. That wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Was I bad?”
“No.” Nex watched her tongue escape and wet her lips. “But you should definitely practice more.” He cupped her face and kissed her again.
This one was firmer, his lips more deliberate against hers as he slid one hand down her back and brought her closer. An involuntary sound left Kat’s throat, and Nex groaned, sliding his tongue along her lips.
“Lesson two is French kissing,” he said against her mouth. His tongue slipped between her lips, caressing her tongue.
Her fingers knotted in his hair, and she melted against him, following his tongue with hers. Her heart fluttered as her body came alight, new desires springing up that included more skin contact. The desire spiked both her excitement and nervousness. Nex’s hand wrapped around her waist, and he sat up straighter, bringing her down firmer on his lap. They broke out of the kiss when Kat gasped at the contact with Nex growing under her. He moved his lips down her neck, and the doorbell rang.
Kat’s eyes snapped open, and she pulled away, nearly tripping as she got off his lap. She touched her fingertips to her lips and tried to catch her breath. Their eyes met, and Nex started to stand. The doorbell rang again.
“I have to go.” Kat dashed past him and grabbed her purse and jacket before rushing out the door. She practically ran into Jason getting out of the house.
“Whoa.” Jason held his hands up.
“Sorry.” She smiled meekly. “Hi.”
“Hi.” He chuckled. “Everything okay?”
“Yep.” Kat nodded, clutching her purse to her chest.
“All right.” Jason offered his arm. “Let’s go.”
Kat took his arm, and he led her to his car where he opened the passenger door for her.
As they drove off, Nex stood by the window. He glared long after the car was gone, eventually going to the kitchen, where he grabbed a bottle of whiskey.
Chapter 12
First Date
Sittinginthecarwith Jason, Kat reminded herself to breathe. It should’ve been because she was on her first date. Or because she had her first kiss, and it elicited all kinds of feelings she wasn’t ready for. However, her apprehension wasn’t for either reason.
This was the first time in a long time she’d been in a car.
