“Is that,” Lucian’s gaze flitted between Kat and Nex, “jealousy I hear?”
“No.” Nex scoffed. “I’m not jealous. Just annoyed.”
“You better hope Lilith never catches wind of this,” Lucian said.
“She won’t. Assuming everyone’s been careful.” Nex eyed them both.
Lucian’s head inclined toward Marcus. “I’m not the one you need to worry about.”
“Don’t look at me. I’ve barely tried to help. I’m here for the food and the beer and the view.” Marcus leaned over the couch to where Kat busied herself making dinner.
Nex blocked his view with a shadow. “Don’t ogle her.”
“Why? Got a claim?”
Nex snarled. “Don’t.”
“Careful, Nex,” Lucian warned. “Lilith is sensitive to jealousy. If she decides to look for you, she’ll be able to smell it a mile away, and that won’t end well. For you or her.”
“It’s not jealousy.” Nex stood. “You two were supposed to help, but you’re pissing me off.”
“Kat’s right.” Marcus swigged his beer. “You are rude.”
Nex inhaled and considered setting Marcus on fire but decided against it. Instead, he returned to the kitchen where Kat chopped vegetables. Unaware of Nex’s presence, she grabbed her vibrating phone and opened the message from Jason. A giggle escaped. Nex rolled his eyes and snatched the phone.
“Hey!” Kat tried to get it back.
Nex slipped the phone into his back pocket. “You shouldn’t let your phone distract you when the stove is on, but if you want it back, you’re more than welcome to get it yourself.”
Grumbling under her breath, Kat returned to her vegetables.
“You can’t like him that much if you’re going to let me stop you from talking to him.”
“I do like him. I also like not fighting, and you’re trying to start a fight.” Kat dropped the vegetables into a skillet where chicken was already cooking. “Again.”
“Fighting is fun, kitten. It gets people passionate. You’ll understand when you finally have sex. Don’t tell me you’re going to let him be the one to do it.”
“What if I am?” Kat whirled around to face him. “You’re the one who said I should get it over with.”
A muscle in Nex’s jaw ticked. “Not with someone like him.”
“Then with who?”
“Someone who can make your skin feel like fire from one look,” Nex brushed his fingers against her neck, “and a simple touch.”
Cheeks reddening, Kat stepped away. “Don’t you have friends to bother?”
“They’re annoying me. Why bother saving yourself this long if you aren’t going to wait for the right person?”
“Who says he’s not the right person? I wasn’t intentionally saving myself. I just never met anyone I wanted to be close to in that way.”
“And you think he’s that someone? Why?”
“He’s nice to me, Nex. I know that’s not a word you know the meaning of, but it means a lot to me that he’s nice. He opens doors and listens to me, and he—”
“Compliments your clothes, holds your hand, talks about your interests at dinner instead of his own?”
Kat pulled on her shirt. “Yeah. He does. Why are you saying it like it’s a bad thing?”
