“Because, kitten,” Nex threw his head back with a loud exhale, “he’s playing you. If he was genuinely interested, he wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off you, and he’d tell you about himself. Relationships go two ways. It’s not all one person talking about their life while the other says nothing. Do you know anything about him?”
“There’s nothing wrong with not being selfish. Not that you’d know.”
“It’s beyond that. How often does he dodge a question, turn it back to you, and make it seem like something sweet? He isn’t asking about your life and taking you to fancy dinners because he cares, he’s doing it to fuck you, and he’s probably guessed you’re a virgin and easy to scare, so he’s taking it slow, playing the part of an interested suitor like the actor he is. What base have you two made it to anyway?”
Kat’s fists balled. “I’m about five seconds away from calling the exorcist.”
“I’m not trying to be mean. I’m telling you there’s something not right about him. I feel it. I felt it that first day he said hi to you.”
“You don’t know him. He’s a sweetheart and a gentleman.”
“That sounds horribly boring.”
“It’s not boring.” Kat turned, grabbed a spatula, and tended to the food. “Consistency is nice.”
“Your life is full of consistency.”
Nex planted his hands on her hips and moved closer until all of her back pressed against all of his front. He gathered her hair to the side and ran his nose down her neck, making her drop the spatula. “Consistency isn’t what you want, is it? Deep down, you want passion.” He slid his hand up her stomach, between her breasts to her neck, turning her head toward him. “You’re clinging to him because you think he’s safe, and the unknown excites you so much it scares you. It makes you feel out of control. And you do love being in control, don’t you? I bet you’d like giving up control to someone else more.” He rubbed his thumb over her lips. “Someone you can trust. It’s much more exciting to be out of control. Especially if someone you want takes control for you. Wouldn’t you like to not be in control, just once?”
Kat was already having a hard time breathing, but then his hand moved from her hip to her lower stomach, his finger playing with the hem of her shirt and brushing against her skin. She couldn’t pull away. Nex nudged her nose with his, their lips nearly touching.
“Imagine it, kitten,” he whispered. “Imagine letting someone else take control. For once, you’d have nothing to worry about. You’d sit back and let them have you, take care of you, dominate you.” He ran his finger along the top of her jeans. “Someone who paid attention enough to know every sensitive spot you have.” He nuzzled her neck, making her fists, and other parts, clench. “Knew you enough to know everything you like, how to push your buttons in the best way, how to take your breath away with the right words, bring paradise to you. Imagine that. Giving your control to someone who’d take care of it and reward you for giving it up. Doesn’t that sound better than having to take care of everything yourself all the time? You’re so tired, Katherine. With the right person, you could feel invigorated and empowered. You should be worshipped and tended to.” He grazed his thumb over the lip she bit until she released it. “Now, doesn’t that soundheavenly?”
While he spoke, Kat leaned back against him. His hand slid under her shirt, caressing below her belly button, sending sensations between her legs. Nex studied her reaction before leaning closer, almost touching her lips with his.
A buzz rumbled as Kat’s phone rang.
Panting and overheated, Kat pushed him away. “Don’t do that. I’m seeing someone.” Her voice was meant to be stern, but it came out shaky.
Earlier hesitance gone, she retrieved her phone from Nex’s back pocket. Jason’s name lit up on the screen. Nex growled and stalked off as Kat took in a steadying breath and answered.
Chapter 14
Demon House Party
Apeptalkwasnecessary before Kat’s next date with Jason. After Nex’s comments, doubt surfaced about Jason’s intentions. Nex was trying to get to her, but it didn’t stop her from noticing that Jason rarely answered a question about himself, and when he did, it was vague. Throughout dinner, she asked him questions, and he brought them back to her without giving much information.
Nex’s words repeated in her mind. He’s playing the part like the actor he is.Kat stared out the window of Jason’s car, wringing her hands together. Nex had scared her this morning when he told her there was a centipede in her bathroom, an illusion he created himself. He also claimed to see her neighbor outside doing inappropriate things with someone much younger, which turned out not to be true. The expression on Kat’s face when she looked out the window to check certainly gave him a good laugh.
That was the problem. She couldn’t tell when he was being honest and when he was messing with her.
“You all right, babe?” Jason squeezed her leg as they drove back to Kat’s house.
“Fine.” Kat tried to push out the negative thoughts Nex put there but couldn’t help herself. “Jay?” Kat twisted in her seat to look at him. The action brought his hand farther up her leg, making Kat’s heart race.
He left his hand high on her thigh. “What’s up?”
“What’s your family like?”
“Pretty average, boring family. What about you?”
“What do average and boring mean?”
“Nothing special. Got both parents and a sibling. Hey, you wanted to see that new romance movie coming out, didn’t you?”
Kat chewed the inside of her cheek. “Yeah, I did. Are you into those kinds of movies, though?”
Jason parked in front of her house, turned toward her, slid his hand behind her head, and pulled her closer. “I’m into whatever gives me another excuse to see you, gorgeous.”
