“What?” Nex asked, surprised to find her staring.
“Nothing.” Kat reached for the wine. “Let’s play the game.”
Chapter 15
True Form
KatalmostaskedNexto buy more wine, but she was concerned about what he’d want in return. Not because she was afraid of him, but because she didn’t trust herself around him. He knew what to say and how to touch and how to reach some new part of her.
It was disarming.
Still, she had a long day thanks to rehearsals and being around Ashley for several hours. On Kat’s way out the theater door, a pair of hands pulled her into a closet. The culprit spun her around, and she breathed a sigh of relief mixed with disappointment.Jason.
Forcing a smile, she couldn’t figure out her emotions. Except she knew what she felt with Nex wasn’t okay. The demon wouldn’t be around forever. He was waiting to get out of her life, trying to get out of this realm, pushing her buttons so she’d send him home. Letting her affection for him grow would only lead to pain. After everything she’d lost, it’d be too much.
Heart already broken, letting him break it more wasn’t an option, so she threw herself into her relationship with Jason and tried to shut out anything she felt for the demon she slept with every night.
Jason backed her to the wall. “Hey, gorgeous.”
Kat wrapped her arms around his neck. “Hi.”
“You did great today. You’re a natural on stage.” He kissed her.
Their intimacy had increased over their last few dates. Several times, they’d parked in her driveway and made out before she went inside and avoided Nex. Partly because he was often in a terrible mood when she got home from dates and partly because, unfortunately, he was a better kisser than Jason. He didn’t need to know that. Things had gotten weirder with Nex when Jason asked her to officially be his girlfriend.
Nex didn’t stay home that night.
Jason’s hands slid into her back pockets. He pulled her against him, his tongue slipping between her lips. She met his tongue with hers, gaining a little more confidence in kissing. He groaned and trailed his lips down her neck.
One of his hands glided under her shirt, caressing her back before circling around and cupping her breast. They’d already made it that far, but it still made Kat nervous. Nervous because she wasn’t sure how to proceed normally in a relationship, and it was all so new, she felt awkward.
His hand lowered to her jeans, then her thigh, getting close to a part of her that awakened when Nex showed up. Jason lifted his head, pressing his forehead against hers. “I was thinking,” his hand stopped between her thighs, almost touching her, “why don’t we have dinner at my place tomorrow night instead of going out? I’ll make it special. Maybe you could stay the night?”
Kat’s eyes widened. Staying the night meant . . .
Was she ready? They hadn’t dated long, but according to Frida, most people hooked up after three dates, and they’d been on ten. She considered what Nex said and how it was close to advice Frida gave her years ago.Get it over with. The first time is always awkward. You learn to enjoy it after you get used to it.
Kat’s heart hammered, but she took in a steadying breath. “Okay. That sounds good.”
“Great. I’ll make it nice. I promise.”
When he kissed her again, nerves overtook her body, and she had a hard time getting into it.
Agreeing was hard, but what was harder was standing in a lingerie store with no idea what was sexy. She sent pictures to Frida, who thought it was for Nex and knew nothing about Jason. On Frida’s suggestion, Kat bought a red, lacy bra and matching underwear. Picking it out was weird, but buying it was mortifying. She hid it in her messenger bag so Nex wouldn’t see.
Between stressing about Nex, tomorrow night, and Ashley being Ashley, Kat was anxious. She didn’t drink often, but she wanted it. Since Nex arrived, she’d been drinking more. They often had drinking-game nights with Marcus and Lucian. Just Marcus and Lucian. For reasons unbeknownst to Kat, Nex didn’t throw another party like the one the night she ended up in his lap.
She made it home, unsurprised that Marcus and Lucian were there. They’d been around more, but Nex’s plan backfired. She didn’t mind company. She actually loved it. The house had been unbearably quiet since her parents died.
“Hey, Kat,” Marcus greeted, his gaze on the TV.
“Hey.” She looked around. Lucian and Marcus were there, but Nex wasn’t. “Where’s Nex?”
“Shower,” Lucian said. “He went on a mission with me, and it got messy.”
“I thought he couldn’t hurt anyone unless I tell him to.”
“He can’t physically hurt anyone. He can only scare them. But I can, and he got too close.”
