“Oh.” Kat wrinkled her nose at what ‘messy’ meant. “Did it . . . go well?” She didn’t know how to ask about it. They mostly killed bad people or people that were getting too close to the truth of what they were.

Lucian chuckled. “You don’t have to ask. I know it creeps you out.”

“I’m allowed to care about your day even if I don’t get it. I need to be in pajamas. I don’t suppose you have any alcohol left?”

“We do, but you’re a minor,” Marcus teased.

Kat narrowed her eyes. “I dare you to keep me from the bottle today.”

Marcus grinned. “I’ll make you a drink.”

Hoping Nex wouldn’t get nosy, Kat went to her room and pushed her bag under her side of the bed. She changed into pajamas in the closet, so if Nex came out, he wouldn’t catch her undressing. They’d crossed too many lines.

Kat exited the closet at the same time Nex came out of the bathroom. Only in a towel. His lean body on display, beads of water rolled down his abs and that V, dripping to . . . Kat darted her eyes away and moved around him for the bathroom.

Nex stepped aside but grabbed her arm. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Bullshit. What’s wrong?”

“I had a long day. I don’t want to talk about it.” Kat wiggled out of his hold and continued to the bathroom.

When she returned to the living room, Nex was in the kitchen, cooking while the other two watched TV. Kat went to the kitchen and found a glass next to a bottle of her favorite wine.

She pointed to the bottle. “Where’d that come from?”

“I picked it up,” Nex said.

“When?”

“Just now.”

“That fast?”

“Yes, kitten, that fast.” He filled the glass and took her hand, placing the glass in it. “Relax. I’ve got dinner.”

“Thank you. How did you do it so quickly?”

“I move fast.”

“Yeah, but . . . Nobody cares when a breeze moves by them that quickly?” She cocked her head to the side. Anytime he stayed invisible, his movement created a breeze. “Doesn’t that raise suspicion?”

“Not if I’m flying and hiding myself.” Nex took a drink from his glass of whiskey.

“You can fly?”

“That’s what I said.”

“Like Peter Pan?”

“Peter Pa—” Nex squared his jaw. “No, it’s not like fucking Peter Pan.”

“Well, I’ve never seen you with wings.”

“That’s because I haven’t been in my true form around you.”

“Why not?”
