Nex sighed and lowered his head, closing his eyes.Cracksandpopssounded. Parts of his head, shoulders, hands, and back had an ember-like glow. Black bat wings sprouted from his back, and black horns emerged from his head. His nails turned to claws, and when he looked up, his eyes were bloodred, his teeth sharper, skin paler.

Kat kept her surprise inside since he seemed so sensitive about it. Stepping forward, she touched one of his wings. Nex stiffened, and she withdrew her hand. “Sorry, did I hurt you?”

“No . . . What are you doing?”

“I’m curious.” She stroked his wing again, running her hand along it before reaching for his horns. “It’s pretty awesome.”

“It’s what?”

“Pretty awesome.” Kat stepped back and regarded him. “You’re so dramatic. It’s not scary. Maybe if I didn’t know you, rounded a corner, and you were there, but it’s also scary when I round a corner and see any big dude I don’t know.”

Mouth agape, Nex stared at her. Kat smiled, and his confusion grew. She should be running.

“Does it hurt?” she asked, brows knitting together. “The cracking sounds painful.”

Nex opened his mouth. No words came out. He’d never shown himself to another person without getting a terrified reaction unless it was another demon. But there she stood, at ease. Her eyebrows lifted at his silence, and he finally found his voice.

“Not anymore. I’ve gotten used to it.”

Kat murmured an “Oh” and smiled. The urge to be with her strengthened. Tenderness wasn’t something he got a lot of, and she was full of it. Tender and sweet and innocent. Everything he wasn’t.

Each day he grew more attached, craving that sweetness he’d never been on the receiving end of. He shifted to human form and went inside, muttering about dinner as he passed by, trying to ignore how good she smelled today. Every day.

Her scent was his favorite.

Chapter 16

Nerves

Wishingshehadsomeoneto get advice from, Kat stared at her reflection blankly. She’d gone back to the mall to buy a dress, hoping something pretty would trick her into feeling confident. It didn’t. Neither did the makeup she spent too much time on.

Her heart pounded, reverberating through her entire body. Setting her hands on the cool, ivory bathroom counter, she counted her breaths. Her phone caught her eye, and she picked it up, running her thumb over the screen to unlock it. The only person she’d consider asking for advice was Frida, but Frida thought she was with Nex and no longer a virgin. But Frida was all Kat had.

Looking in the mirror again, everything was off. Her hair wasn’t right, the red dress wasn’t right, and despite the time she spent on it, her makeup wasn’t right.

Am I supposed to be this nervous to have sex?Her phone buzzed, and she glanced down.

Jason: I’ll be there in ten minutes, babe. You ready?

A text had never been more difficult to answer. She wanted to call Frida and ask for advice, but part of her already knew what Frida would say—the same thing she’d told her for years since Frida first had sex at seventeen.Virginity doesn’t mean anything. Get it over with. The first time won’t be great, but it’ll be good after that.

Kat’s thumb hovered over the “call” button on Frida’s contact. It was assumed Kat wasn’t a virgin because Nex was living here, but she could claim that wasn’t true without twisting the story too much. Kat hit the “call” icon.

“Hey, Kitty Kat,” Frida answered. “Did Nex like the lingerie?”

Kat sat on the edge of the tub, smoothing her dress. “He hasn’t seen it.”

“Are you okay? You sound weird. Is something wrong?”

“Um, I . . . wanted to ask you something, but it’s kind of awkward.”

“Oh, give me a break. You can ask me anything.”

Kat dropped her voice to a whisper. Nex was in the living room, and she didn’t want him to hear. “Were you—were you nervous to have sex the first time?”

“Yeah. I think everyone’s a little nervous. It’s not like any education properly prepares you. Why are you asking? Haven’t you and Nex?”

“No.”
