“Oh my God! He’s living with you, and you haven’t had sex? Damn girl, that’s restraint. He’s a fine specimen.”

“Uh, yeah. How do you know if you’re ready? How do you know if it’s too soon?”

“I don’t know.” Frida sighed. “It depends. If I’m being honest, I wasn’t sure I was ready my first time, but I don’t regret it. They say you remember your first time, but meh. I wasn’t hung up on the first time being special. I more remember my first time havinggoodsex rather than my first time at all. But, as you know, we were raisedverydifferently.” She laughed. “I love my uncle and auntie, but our parents were opposites. Sex wasn’t a hushed topic in my house like it was in yours.”

“Did you love Daryl?” Kat asked. Daryl was Frida’s first.

“Uh, no. I thought I did, but I didn’t know what love was at that age. I cringe thinking back on me in high school. I was never that mature girl like you. I was the wild one who made poor decisions and didn’t think things through. You’ve never been like that.”

“You’ve always told me I need to loosen up.”

“You do need to loosen up, but listen. Do youwantto have sex tonight?”

Kat hesitated. Did she? “I think so. You said to get it over with, right?”

“Only if you want to. If it was me, I’d get it over with. But you’re not me. How long have you known him?”

Grateful Frida didn’t know much about her and Nex, Kat could easily answer a question like that with the truth about Jason. “Over a year, but we’ve been dating a little over two months.”

“Do you trust him?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, I can’t tell you what to do. If you trust him and you want to, then do it. Nerves are normal. Hell, I still get nervous when I have sex with a new person for the first time. I can only tell you what I would do, and I’d do it, but it doesn’t matter what I’d do. Do what’s right for you.”

Another notification came through—a message from Jason saying he was here. He was here, and Kat didn’t want Nex to answer the door.

“Thanks, Fri. I gotta go,” Kat said. “I’ll call you later.”

“Hey, if you decide to do it and want to talk after, call me, okay? Time doesn’t matter.”

“Thanks. Bye.”

She hung up and stood, glancing in the mirror one last time. She added a touch of lip gloss, then rushed to the closet and picked some strappy black heels Frida made her buy. Once she was done, she slipped into a long jacket, hoping to escape Nex’s notice. She walked out as he was entering the bedroom. His gaze darted up and down her body, making her feel naked, despite the jacket.

“You look nice,” he said. “Are you wearing a different perfume?”

Kat nodded and avoided his eyes.

“What’re you so nervous about?”

“I’m not nervous.” Kat laughed too loud and too high.

Nex regarded her through squinted eyes. “Right. Well, when you inevitably get home at exactly eleven o’clock, we’re planning to play a drinking game. You want more wine?”

Kat bit her lip, then stopped, remembering she put on lip gloss. She wrung her hands together. “I’m not . . . I’m not going to be home by eleven.”

“Sure you aren’t. You and Mr.I Own Nothing But Khakis And Polosare always home by eleven. So, what, getting wild and coming home at eleven thirty instead?”

She couldn’t help how quiet her voice was. “I’m not coming home tonight.” She didn’t want to look at him, but the silence made her. Kat looked away, but she could feel his gaze like a physical touch.

He cupped her jaw, turning her to face him. “Don’t. There’s something not right about him, kitten. I can tell with people, and there’s something off.”

Kat’s expression fell. She was never sure when he was being honest. Yesterday, he’d nearly convinced her he’d seen her pastor with a woman who wasn’t his wife and had a great big laugh. It wouldn’t be the first time he lied to mess with her.

There were no warnings that Jason wasn’t a good person. Dating was foreign to Kat, but he was always nice and said sweet things. He was the first person since her parents died who made her smile. He hadn’t pushed her further than she wanted to go, which could only mean this was another one of Nex’s pranks.

Kat pulled her hand away. “You’re saying that because you like messing with me.”
