“Honestly, I kind of got that.” Jason held her face. “Don’t be nervous. I’m prepared.”

Kat smiled as much as her nerves allowed. Jason wrapped his arms around her. “Hey, if you want to sleep and nothing else, that’s fine. We don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to. No pressure, babe.”

“No.” Kat peered at the bed, then up at him.Get it over with.“I want to.”

They moved toward the bed, and Kat grew more nervous with each piece of clothing removed.Nerves are normal.

They didn’t feel normal. She couldn’t relax, and her mind raced so much she couldn’t enjoy the moment. Jason hovered over her with practically nothing between them, and she considered telling him she wasn’t ready, but he spoke before she could.

“Are you okay?” He raised his hand to her face. “You can tell me if you want me to stop. I don’t want you to be uncomfortable, and you seem uncomfortable. I’m patient, babe. I can wait for you. You’re worth it.”

Some of her tension eased. He cared about her enough to notice she was nervous, to stop. He stared down at her, giving her a reassuring smile that made it easier for her to smile.

“Let’s not.” He pressed a kiss to her lips and reached for a blanket. “I don’t want to push you.”

More tension dissipated. She was afraid he wouldn’t take it well if she changed her mind. The fact he did confirmed her suspicion that Nex lied. Jason was a good guy, and Frida was right. Virginity didn’t mean anything.

He started to get off her, and Kat held his hips. “I don’t want to stop.”

“You sure?”

“I’m sure.”

“Okay. Tell me if that changes.” He kissed her and settled between her legs.

Kat tried to relax, but the first time hurt. Even though he had lube, there was a sting. Kat closed her eyes, and it was over a lot faster than she expected. It didn’t feel terrible, but she didn’t understand why people liked sex. Then again, didn’t Frida tell her the first time was always like that?

Jason lifted off her and sat back. “I’ll be right back, okay? I gotta dump the condom.”

“Okay.”

He walked away, and Kat rolled to face the opposite direction. Despite having sex with him, it weirded her out to watch his naked body. An uneven breath escaped as she pulled her legs together and winced at the sting between them. Was she supposed to feel something? Happy? Satisfied? Content? Closer to him?

She didn’t. Part of her wanted to leave, but that couldn’t be normal. She sat up and reached for Jason’s phone to check the time, and it illuminated with a text.

Ashley: Are you done with the virgin yet? I’m outside, waiting for your promise from earlier. I hope you weren’t serious about her staying over. Send her home so we can enjoy the rest of the night. You stopped and reassured her before, right? Told you it’d work. You’re welcome.

Dread and unease started in Kat’s chest and scattered, sinking into her stomach, spreading to her hands, which shook as she reread the text. Tears stung the backs of her eyes. Then another message came in.

Ashley: Baby, hurry up. We agreed you’d dump her after you got her v-card. Mission accomplished. She won’t show her face at rehearsal anymore. Now kick her out because six hours since our last fuck is six hours too long.

Tears spilled, and Kat dropped the phone. Every muscle paralyzed until the sink sounded from the bathroom. Kat got off the bed and pulled her clothes on. The words and what they meant sunk in, the tears fell quicker, and the nausea grew more aggressive.

“Hey, what are you doing?” Jason, still naked, stared at her with furrowed brows. She grabbed his phone and launched it between his legs. He groaned and cupped himself after failing to catch the phone. “What thefuck?”

“Sorry, will that make it hurt for you to sleep with Ashley after I’m gone?” Kat snatched her heels, heading to the door.

“What are you . . .” Jason didn’t finish his sentence, not that it mattered.

Kat was already out the door, running to the kitchen to grab her things. She stuffed her phone in her purse, shoulders shaking as more tears poured. She’d lain there with him, vulnerable and exposed, falling for his lies and reassurances. Reassurances he didn’t even come up with on his own. Every moment with him was a lie to get her . . .

A sob escaped, and Kat turned for the door, stopping when Jason stood in the doorway, blocking her exit. She wiped the tears and glared. “Move.”

“Geeze, I didn’t know you had it in you to be so mad.”

Somehow, his lack of apology and not bothering to look guilty made it hurt worse. All she could think about was how, because of tonight, he knew what she looked like naked, and his stare made her feel exposed. Vulnerable. Violated.

“Move,” Kat repeated when he didn’t. She didn’t want to touch him to get out of the house, but she would if she had to. Her heart was cracked enough, but when he chuckled, laughedat her, it fully split.
