Moans and grunts from Ashley and Jason made Nex’s ears twitch. Good. In one place together. That made it easier. Rage coursed through him, and he cracked his knuckles, staring at Jason’s front door. The worst kinds of people who brought harm to thousands didn’t fill him with as much rage as the man and woman who hurt Katherine.
“You’re going to wish I could kill you.” A dark smile formed on his face. “No one hurts my angel.”
Jason lay back, Ashley riding him. She moaned, bouncing up and down while he held her hips and thrust into her. Both were close to climax when flames enveloped the bed. The fire couldn’t hurt them, but they didn’t know that.
Ashley screamed and jumped off the bed. Jason clambered to his feet, nearly falling on his face.
Ashley squealed. “What the hell happened?”
“I don’t know.” Jason sprinted for the fire extinguisher.
Ashley leapt up to follow, but the door slammed. She gasped and backed away. The lights shut off, the fire from the bed the sole source of illumination. Ashley tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge. A deep growl rumbled, causing her to screech and back against the wall.
Through the flames, a silhouette appeared—a creature with horns and glowing red eyes but no other visible features. She screamed and wrenched at the stuck door.
I thought you liked to play games, Ashley.A low, grating voice sounded in her head, and she cried, scrambling against the door as the dark figure drew closer.
“Don’t hurt me.” Ashley slid to the floor, her body trembling. “What are you?”
Nex used shadows to force her to look up at him. “An avenger for the innocent, sent from the depths of hell to punish you for your sins. Hurt any innocent people recently?”
Ashley shook her head and tried to look away, but the shadows wrapped around her like tendrils, holding her in place. In an instant, the figure and the force holding her were gone. Whimpering, she yanked the door open and dashed down the hall.
In the kitchen, Jason was backed against a wall. Knives floated in the air, points to his throat and dick. Lights flickered. A figure materialized, towering over him with glowing red eyes that stripped his soul bare.
“There’s a special place in hell for people like you.” The figure growled, and clawed hands wrapped around Jason’s neck. “See how funny it is now.”
Jason’s eyes widened. Horrible, all-consuming embarrassment, shame, heartbreak, and violation took over him. He couldn’t stand it. Fear and agony burned through his body. Every limb pricked with pain and paralyzation. He whimpered and nearly sank to the floor, but cool knife blades still threatened his most vulnerable parts.
“Feeling helpless and scared?” the figure asked. “How fucking horrible that must be.”
The figure vanished, but the knives remained, keeping Jason from moving. Hyperventilating, he peered over at Ashley. “Help me.”
Ashley shook her head, ran to the front door, and jerked on the handle. It didn’t open. Utensils, dishes, and glasses flew around the kitchen, almost hitting Jason. Silverware scattered, and ceramic shattered against the floor and walls. A loud screech filled the air as letters were carved into his cupboards.
Liar.
Everything dropped to the floor, and Jason collapsed, unable to stop shaking.
“I can’t get out!” Ashley screamed, pulling on the door.
Jason rushed to the door, but he couldn’t open it either. The lights flickered again, and another sound raked in their ears. Scraping, screeching, and tearing. Five deep scratches on both sides of the hallway walls moved toward them, shredding the wallpaper and damaging the wood underneath. From no visible source.
“We’re going to die.” Jason cowered against the door with Ashley.
I’m not going to kill you,the voice boomed in their minds.I’m going to put the fear of hell in you.

Auditions
IntensenauseawokeKat,and she bolted to the bathroom. Alcohol from hours earlier emptied from her stomach, burning her throat as she heaved into the toilet. The hair she pushed out of her face kept falling in front of her until Nex held it back. She reached a pausing point in the vomiting but couldn’t find the strength to lift her head.
“Don’t do that,” she muttered, squeezing her eyes shut. “I don’t want you to see me like this.”
“Too late. I’m not going anywhere.”
Bile rose in her throat and prevented her from speaking. She gripped the toilet and retched. Nex stayed.
