Kat shrugged. “I don’t believe you. But I do wonder . . .”

“What?”

Confidence fading, she turned away. “Nothing.”

He spun her to face him. “What?”

She bit her lip, her breathing erratic. “I wonder about the way in which you care.”

Nex ran his thumb over the lip she held hostage until it was released. “How do you want me to care?”

Kat blushed and avoided his eyes. “Should we have dinner?”

Nex grabbed her chin so she’d look at him. The firm grip elicited a tingle through her body that’d been missing for weeks.

“Answer my question, kitten.” Nex stared like he could see right through her. “Do you want me to care for you the way I have been, or,” he caressed her waist, “do you want more?”

“What does more entail?”

“More,” Nex purred, rubbing his thumb over her lower lip. “If you don’t know or don’t want to tell me, you’re clearly not ready.” He moved away and grabbed ingredients from the grocery bags. “I’ll make dinner.”

Nex started cooking, but Kat couldn’t move. Hadn’t she decided not to let anyone close again? But Nex had been good to her for the last month, had taken care of her in ways she didn’t know she needed. He’s also a demon. It couldn’t be a good idea to get involved with a demon who’d eventually go home. Yet, thinking about it made her crave to be close to him.

She didn’t know what to make of it. Being with him was dangerous, but being without him sounded worse. Instead of letting her mind go crazy trying to figure out what she felt or what it meant, she poured another glass of wine and left the kitchen to put distance between them.

It didn’t stop her from looking back at him. Hands braced on the counter, he stared straight ahead. His gaze darted to her. Heat rushed to her cheeks and more. She couldn’t look away. He broke eye contact first. She missed it. His eyes brought more peace than she thought possible after the accident. Maybe it was silly to think she could feel safe and at peace with a demon, but Nex wasn’t just a demon.

He was everything.

Chapter 21

A Church Friend

SinceLilith’svisit,Nexrarely left Kat unguarded. That was why he left Arda with Kat, thinking Arda could handle anything. But Arda couldn’t handle Katherine.

Nex came in view of Kat’s house when Arda dashed outside, tears in her eyes. “What’s wrong?” Nex listened for Kat’s heartbeat inside.

“She’s—She’s . . .” Arda wiped her nose. “Sosweetand genuine I can’t take it. I want to keep her forever.”

Nex groaned. “I thought something was wrong.”

“She’s pure, Nex. So pure.”

Nex brushed past Arda, mumbling, “I’m aware.”

An incredible scent hit him as he entered the house. Katherine stood at the kitchen island, adding raspberries to a tall, round chocolate cake.

He leaned his forearms on the counter. “What did you do to Arda?”

“Nothing. She had a lot of pent-up emotions.” Kat adjusted a raspberry on the cake. “It’s not good. It needs to be let out.”

Nex regarded her with furrowed brows. It was the second time she’d played therapist for his demon friends. He clicked his tongue, eyeing the cake. “Another cake you’re taking to church that I can’t have?”

“Nope. This one’s for you.” Her smile had a bigger impact than he liked, but it wasn’t enough for him to miss that there was something else behind this.

He straightened. “What do you want?”

Kat tucked her hands behind her back. “Nothing big. A little favor.”
