He leaned closer, his nose nuzzling hers. “Does that mean you liked it?”

“I—I don’t know.”Why have my lungs forgotten how to work?“It happened so long ago. I can barely remember.”

“You know I can tell when you’re lying.” He inhaled her scent—vanilla and pear. “It’s one of my many gifts.” He curled his fingers around the back of her neck. “But very well, kitten. I’ll play along. You don’t remember. I think that means I need to refresh your memory.” He inched closer, lips almost touching hers. “Doesn’t it?”

Kat hesitated. Nex scared her. Not because he was a demon, but because she felt so much with him. Something he said before was right: He made her feel out of control. But he also made her feel whole.

“It . . .” Kat licked her lips, her tongue grazing his lips in the process. His grip on her waist and neck tightened, making her want more. “It wouldn’t hurt.”

“Wouldn’t hurt?” Nex chuckled, dragging his nose to her jaw, then to her ear, where he whispered, “You can do better than that, kitten. Do you want me to refresh your memory or not?”

He pressed his forehead to hers. Every dark fleck in his amber eyes made them so much more beautiful and complex, a pattern she wanted to explore. Whether it was a conscious decision or not, she lifted her hands to his shoulders. Hard muscles and tendons made her fingers itch to explore more.

“Maybe.” The word was quiet, most of her body’s energy directed to her pounding heart.

“I’ll accept a maybe, this once.” His lips brushed hers. “Next time, I expect ayes.”

He pressed his lips against hers, and she melted into him. Holding her closer, he dug his fingers into her lower back and slid a hand to the back of her head. Kat locked her hands around his neck, deepening the kiss.

Their first kiss took her breath away, but it had nothing on this one. Every emotion she’d held back poured into this kiss, making it more intimate. Nex’s tongue caressed the seam of her lips, asking for entrance.

She granted him access, opening her mouth for his tongue to slide in. His tongue glided along hers, eliciting an involuntary sound from Kat. Kissing her harder, Nex pushed her against the doorframe. He cupped her face, devouring her with the starving hunger he’d contained for weeks.

His hands moved down her neck, along her shoulders, and over her waist. He dug his fingers into her hips, pulling her closer. The trail of his hands, coupled with his tight grip, left Kat’s body aware of every movement, sending her nerves into a state of pleasant tension.

When his teeth grazed her lower lip, sucking it in and biting down, she let out a small whimper. He soothed the bite with a sweep of his tongue and a rougher kiss. His hand tangled in her hair and held her in place as he kissed harder, seeking more, never getting enough of her soft lips.

The kiss, his hands, the doorframe, it became so much Kat couldn’t breathe. She thought she was breathless before, but this added intensity, the way he pinned her to the doorframe . . . His affection stole the air from her lungs, and she couldn’t get it back. She broke the kiss, panting and leaning her forehead against his.

Some of her embarrassment faded as she gazed up at him. He was as out of breath as her. They didn’t move, only stared at one another, neither wanting to look away.

Ever so slowly, Nex’s lips curled into a smirk. “I never cared for tradition, but I could get used to this one.” He kissed her forehead. “You have no idea what you do to me.”

“I do something to you?”

He nodded, rubbing his thumb across her cheek.

Dishes clattered, and she remembered where they were. Embarrassment for kissing him like that in someone else’s house cleared her clouded thoughts. “We, uh, we should go. You’re done, aren’t you?”

Nex nodded, watching her so closely she couldn’t help the blush.

She darted her eyes away. “Let’s say goodbye.” Kat hurried down the hall, setting her hands on her cheeks in an attempt to cool them. For once, she was eager to go out in the cold. Maybe the icy wind would soothe her overheated body.

Bernice smiled, sipping tea at the table. “All done?”

Kat pressed her lips together. “All done. I’ll see you Wednesday?”

“You will.” Bernice craned her neck to see Nex, who stood behind Katherine. “Thank you, my dear. I appreciate it.”

Nex gave her a small smile since she was the reason he tasted Katherine’s sweet lips again.

Bernice rose from the table and kissed Kat’s cheek, hugging her. “I don’t know what I’d do without you, Katherine. You’re a blessing to me.” She pulled back with a warm smile, and Kat went down the hallway.

Bernice stepped toward Nex, and he tensed at the impending hug. She laughed and offered a hand, which he took. “Thank you, dear. Have a wonderful evening.”

“You too.”

Nex frowned when she pressed something into his palm. He glanced down, finding mistletoe.
