When they finished dinner, Kat cleared the table and went to the kitchen to get the pies.
Kat distracted, Lucian leaned across the table toward Nex.Lilith isn’t here anymore, Lucian said. She’s back in the underworld.
Are you sure?Nex caught Kat in the corner of his eye. In the kitchen, cutting the pies, she was oblivious to the exchange.
Positive.Lucian nodded. There was a surge in souls after this last human conflict. So many at once that she was ordered to return to handle it. It’s going to take up a bit of her time.
Nex rose from the table.Let me know anything else you hear. And if she comes back.
Nex strode into the kitchen, where Kat placed slices of pumpkin pie on plates. She sprayed canned whipped cream on each piece, then sprayed some on her finger and licked it off. She didn’t have sugar often and loved whipped cream. Distracted by spraying more on her finger, she didn’t notice Nex until he grabbed her wrist and brought her finger to his mouth.
Taking his time, he sucked her finger longer than necessary. He stared at her, swirling his tongue around her finger, gently biting the tip before letting it go and watching her face turn a shade of red that rivaled her hair.
“What? You can’t have all the fun.” He snatched the can and sprayed his own finger.
Kat’s breath hitched when he raised it to her lips. Her gaze darted between him and his finger. Decency dictated she shouldn’t do what he clearly wanted and what she secretly desired.
“Open.” His demanding tone, which normally drove her crazy and made her rebellious, had a vastly different effect.
Kat opened her mouth and let his finger in, cleaning it with her tongue, unable to stop herself from lightly sucking. Nex removed his finger, his darkened eyes leaving more than just her cheeks warm. Breathless, she wanted to squeeze her legs together to ease the ache that had grown all day and now spiked. She couldn’t tear her eyes away from him, and his intense stare didn’t let her.
“Are you guys bringing dessert or what?” Marcus called.
His voice snapped Kat out of it, and she grabbed two plates, rushing to the table with Nex behind her. They ate pie while Marcus told a story about a time he almost had Thanksgiving dinner. He was sent after someone who’d embezzled money from a charity and was funding a group of demon hunters. Unfortunately, Marcus didn’t get dinner because things turned messy.
In normal circumstances, the story would’ve riveted Kat, but she couldn’t stop looking at Nex. She was magnetized to him. Not looking at him wasn’t an option. Every time her attention drifted to him, Nex felt it and met her gaze. The moment their eyes locked, Kat would look away, wishing she had something to fan herself with. She crossed her legs and took a long drink of water, offering smiles to Marcus as he told his story.
Lucian and Marcus disagreed about what really happened that day, and during their argument, Kat felt Nex’s gaze on her. Her breaths were deliberate so they could stay under control. How did the house get so hot when it’s freezing outside?
Then, contact. Nex’s knuckles brushed her exposed knee. The graze may have been at her knee, but the sensation spread everywhere. His electric touch sent a bolt right up her legs. She sucked in a breath and peered at him, finding that intense stare waiting.
“Give me the word, and I’ll tell them to take their ridiculous argument elsewhere.” Nex’s eyes flitted to her lips briefly, his hand covering her knee.
Mouth dry, Kat struggled to speak. “They’re fine.”
His hand on her skin wasn’t helping her stay focused, so she got up to clean. When the demons finished dessert, Marcus and Lucian turned on the TV, and Nex joined Kat in cleaning.
Marcus and Lucian provided a decent buffer, but their presence ended too quickly, leaving Nex and Kat alone with the TV on. Nex sent Kat to sit down, saying he’d finish cleaning—an attempt to put distance between them. The growing tension weakened his resolve. He wanted nothing more than to slide his hands up her dress.
Kat’s feet hurt from spending the whole day cooking, so she protested little before curling up on the couch, watching the show Marcus and Lucian left on. Unfamiliar with it, she was caught off guard when a sex scene began. She sat up, searching for the remote to change the station but couldn’t find it.
Nex appeared beside the couch, making her squeal and jump up. “What’s wrong, kitten?” He held up the remote. “Not your kind of show?”
“It’s unrealistic.” She huffed, snatched the remote, and switched the TV off.
“How?”
“Sex isn’t . . . like that.” She waved at the TV.
“Your experience with sex was bad. That doesn’t make sex itself bad.”
“I can’t imagine it feeling good.”
“That’s because you haven’t had the right person touching you.”
Nex returned to the kitchen, and Kat sunk into the couch, hiding her face. Every interaction left her craving to be closer to him. Wanting to be physically close to someone was foreign. Her entire body ached for attention from him. She thought back to his expression when she’d cleaned the whipped cream off his finger, and it did nothing to help the arousal crawling under her skin.
Embarrassment wore off as much as it was going to, and she wanted a cup of tea before bed. Nex was almost done with the dishes, and she avoided him as she got out her cup and a tea bag. She started the kettle, and the quietness hit her. The sink wasn’t running anymore. She meant to turn, but Nex came up behind her, flattening his palms against the counter on either side of her, caging her in.
