Swallowing, Kat knew she’d be late for work if this continued. She kept her eyes on his. Nowhere else. “I’m going to get ready.”

“Oh, of course, I’ll shower with you.” Nex grabbed her hand and tugged her toward the bathroom.

“No!”

“Why?”

“Because you’ll distract me, and I’ve never been late, and I’m not going to start on a busy day.” Kat ducked into the bathroom, mostly closed the door, and peeked out at him.

He chuckled. “What’s wrong, Katherine? Did I turn you into a sex addict? Do you want me so bad you have to hide?”

“Shut up,” Kat squeaked, closing the door. “And don’t appear in here!”

His response echoed in her head.Fine. I’ll imagine your naked, wet body and how it would feel against mine. But you owe me. One way or another, I’ll get wet with you today.

A squeal escaped, muffled by her hands. She had to get out of the house fast, or she wouldn’t leave.

Kat cringed at her hair in the mirror, mortified Nex saw her looking like such a mess. Only allowing herself a few seconds of wallowing in humiliation, she tied her hair back, and her eyes widened at the number of hickeys covering her neck.

“Oh my God,” she whispered, hiding her face in her hands, not daring to look in the mirror another time.

Thanks to Nex, she spent longer on makeup to conceal the hickeys. A great deal of her day would be focused on keeping her hair over her neck.

After dressing, she entered the living room, thankful Nex had the decency to put on boxers. “Do you have any idea what you did to my neck? Can you maybe not make it obvious what we do in private?”

Nex scoffed. “I don’t know why you’re upset. It’smyhandiwork that’s being hidden for no reason.”

“For no reason?” She set her hand on her neck, cheeks burning at the memory of how many there were. “You know why I have to cover it. Why did you do that?”

“Why did I do that?” Nex stalked toward her, and she backed up, the wall halting her retreat. “Because, kitten.” He moved her hair out of the way, lowering his lips to her neck. “I want everyone to tell from one look that you’retaken.”

Kat inhaled, fingers twitching to reach for him while he kissed her neck. “What are you doing? I have to go.”

“I missed a spot.” He sucked on her reddening skin, and Kat’s practicality battled her desire. “There. Looks good on you. Goes with your hair.”

Kat narrowed her eyes, then headed for the kitchen. “You’re unbelievable.”

“In bed? I know.” He followed and leaned on the counter, getting in the way of her making tea. “Believe me, kitten, you moaning my name and writhing under me told me that already.”

Kat’s body tingled with the memory of the actions that elicited those responses. Talking would only bait him, and that was dangerous.

Leaving the house wasn’t easy. He cornered her and kissed her until she wanted to climb back into bed with him. However, she clung to her weakening resolve and thanked herself for being smart enough to pack concealer for the new hickey.

Less hectic than the day before, the bookstore still had plenty of angry and overbearing customers, the kind of people who tempted Kat to say, “Thanks for the Christmas joy you spread.” Instead, she did what she was supposed to—smiled, then complained to her boss.

The hour grew later, fewer people came in, and more snow fell. Connie left to buy dinner to thank Kat for working the busy weekend and closing on Black Friday. They had to sneak food between customers, but finally, a moment came when more people read than approached the cash register.

Despite her hunger, Kat could barely focus on eating. Her mind kept returning to last night, this morning, Nex moving inside—

“Can you believe what happened last night?” Connie asked.

“What?” Kat’s fork clattered to the countertop. “What about last night?”

“The weird meteor shower. Why are you blushing?”

“I-I’m not. It’s warm between the heater and all the people.” She cleared her throat. “What meteor shower?”

Connie eyed Kat but didn’t push. “There was a meteor shower that no one saw coming. Astronomers are confused and trying to explain it. It was beautiful. I caught the end of it on my way home.”
