“What plans?”
“Get your mind out of the gutter, kitten. I’m not having sex with you tonight. You’re not used to it, and if I do, you’ll be sore. Come on.” He led her to the bathroom, where a hot bath was prepared. “You can’t tell me you’re not a little sore after this morning.”
“I guess I am a little.” Tenderness didn’t stop her from wanting him.
“The bath will help.” He slid her coat off and lifted her dress. “I told you I’d get you wet with me one way or another.”
Even though he’d seen her, she had an urge to cover up in the bright light of the bathroom.
Nex caught her wrists and shook his head. “Don’t. I want to look at you. You’re beautiful.”
Kat fought her instincts while he undressed her and then himself. He got in first and offered her a hand into the water. He sat and drew her back against him, arms around her waist, lips against her neck and then her ear. The closeness made Kat smile and sink into him. She set her hands on his, letting her eyes shut. She didn’t know there were so many ways to be intimate without having sex. His arms locked around her made her feel more relaxed and at home than she had in a long time.
Panic surfaced. What if I’m the only one this attached? Her grip tightened.
Nex threaded his fingers through hers, his lips grazing the shell of her ear, his words a reassurance that allowed her tension to ease. “I missed you too, kitten.”
Chapter 26
Hers
Katwasatchurch, the one place Nex couldn’t follow and the only major source of tension between them. He didn’t care for her going to church. Although he didn’t outright say it, it was evident in the small comments and sulking when she returned. Because of that, she wasn’t anxious to get home like usual.
Until her phone vibrated.
Nex: I want to fulfill that dream you told me about. The one with your father’s coworker. I want to be the face attached to all your fantasies. What do you say, kitten? You want me to bend you over and have my way with you?
Kat flipped the phone screen down in her lap.Not an appropriate conversation for church. She stared ahead, ignoring the weight of her phone, focusing on Pastor Brighton. She crossed her legs, then uncrossed and crossed them again.Don’t answer. Don’t answer in church.
She bit her lip and opened the message, fingertips flitting across the screen.
Kat: I’d like that.
She sent it and shook her head to clear the lustful thoughts.
As soon as the service ended, she gathered her things into her messenger bag and darted toward the door, hoping to avoid social interactions. Then someone grabbed her arm. The touch relaxed her body in a sense of complete peace. She glanced up at the bluest eyes attached to an almost unrealistically perfect face. His face was mature but free of all blemishes and crinkles that indicated an aging body.
“Hello,” the stranger greeted with a friendly smile.
Kat stepped out of his hold. “Hi.”
“Forgive me. I wanted to say your voice is beautiful.”
“Oh.” Despite Nex not liking her attendance at church, when she was offered a solo singing position every other week, he encouraged her to accept. This week was her first time. “Thank you. I was a little nervous.”
“Nervous? I find that hard to believe.” He chuckled, and the sound reminded her of cozying up with a blanket at home. His black slacks had no wrinkles, nor did the crisp white shirt tucked into those slacks. The tie emphasized the vibrancy of his eyes, and he stood almost a foot taller than her. “You have a stunning voice.”
“Thank you.” While his touch was calming, his continued eye contact was scrutinizing. “I’m sorry, I don’t think we’ve met. Have you been here before?”
In the small congregation, she would’ve noticed him. There was something different about him.
“I’m Gabriel.” He gave her a pearly-white smile and offered his hand. “And no, it’s my first time. I quite enjoyed it. How long have you been attending?”
Kat shook his hand and pulled back as soon as was polite. “I’m Katherine, and I’ve been coming since before I can remember.”
“Wonderful. So, it’s worth staying then? I’m visiting the area for an unknown amount of time. For work. Trying to find a place to fit in while I’m here.”
“What do you do for work?”
