“Please?”
“No!”
Nex scowled. “For fuck’s sake.”
“Katherine Milton?” the director called. “You’re up.”
Chapter 4
Loopholes
Katrusheddownthestreet, arms wrapped around herself.Don’t cry.
Nex was right behind her, and she wanted nothing more than to punch him. She didn’t get the part. The last thing she needed was him pestering her.
“Kitten.” Nex walked alongside her and caught her arm to make her stop. “That audition was bullshit. Let me kill Ashley.” He gestured back in the general direction of the theater. “She’s a cock-sucking bitch. No one will miss her. Except the director and whoever else’s cock she sucks to get what she wants.”
“Ew! Oh my God!” Kat covered her ears. “What’s wrong with you?” Yanking out of his grip, she continued down the street.
“You know that’s all it is, don’t you?” Nex caught up. “She practically flashed her tits at him, and I could smell him on her. She didn’t fuck that preppy boy you have eyes for. She fucked the director.”
“Do you have to talk like that?” Kat wrinkled her nose. “Geeze.”
“Don’t tell me you’re offended by the wordtits. You have some.” He gestured to her breasts. “How can that be offensive?”
“Seriously.” Kat stopped and poked his chest. “Shut up. I can’t take it. You’re so annoying and abrasive. Go away, and let me have a few minutes to be sad. Is that too much to ask?”
“You want to be left alone. I want to go home. The simple solution is to let me kill Ashley.”
“I hate you.” Kat stormed away.
“I don’t care that you hate me, kitten. I care that you give me a fucking name.”
Kat ignored him and entered a grocery store, surprised he didn’t speak again. As she glanced around, she found he wasn’t following her anymore. Sighing, she grabbed a basket. In moments like these, she wished she could buy alcohol. Two more years.
Instead, she stared at the wine her mom used to get, moved on, and grabbed a frozen pizza. Normally she wouldn’t buy it, but she was too sad not to have carbs. Overcome with guilt, she chose one with cauliflower crust.
The truth was, even if Ashley slept with the director to get the part, Kat had messed up. She froze and stuttered. Every practice she’d done went smoothly, but Ashley’s taunting smile distracted her.
After shopping, Kat made it to her porch without seeing Nex. Her suspicion grew. She opened the door and peered inside. Silence. Moving through the house, she found it empty.
Grocery bags set down, she ran into her bedroom to find pajamas and change before he appeared again. She slipped on leggings and another sweater. Once she was done, her shoulders relaxed. Still no Nex.
Returning to the kitchen, Kat turned on the oven and put the groceries away. She slid the pizza into the oven and reached for her mug, but a hand locked around her wrist.
“Based on how uptight you are with everything else, I doubt you’ll want to use a mug to drink wine.” Nex pressed against her back, his arm over hers, hand clamped on her wrist. She stopped breathing and focused on restarting her heart.
“Can’t you leave me alone for one night?” She scowled. “And I don’t have any wine.”
“I know.” He squeezed her wrist until she let the mug go. “Your longing stare at the wine showed me what kind you wanted.” He brought his other arm around her side, holding a bottle of wine in front of her and trapping her between his arms. “What’s wrong? Are you so young you can’t buy alcohol and too good a girl to find a way around the law to buy it anyway?”
“You weren’t in the store.” She turned to push him.
He didn’t budge. “I was in the store. I was giving you your moment of peace.”
“Which ended too soon.” Kat huffed, shoving against him. “Back off, Nex.”
“Why? Do I make you nervous, kitten?”
