“Sorry.” Nex stood and accepted the hug. “I wasn’t expecting you. Katherine said you were somewhere far south.”

“This play’s important to her, so the parents and I flew over to surprise her. We couldn’t miss it, especially since we can’t make it back for Christmas.”

“Parents . . .” The blood drained from Nex’s face. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

“Yeah, right, sorry. This is my mom and dad, Alice and David.” She stepped back and gestured to a couple behind her. The woman had dark hair in a short bob and wore a long burgundy dress. The man was half dressed up in jeans with a blue dress shirt tucked in. “Mom and Dad, this is Kitty Kat’s boyfriend, Nex.”

Nex remained stiff and unresponsive. Marcus elbowed him.

Alice stepped forward and pulled Nex into a hug. “Nice to meet you.”

“Heard a lot about you.” David offered his hand. “Good to finally meet you.”

Nex reluctantly shook his hand and tried to smile. He’d rather be in hell cleaning up blood than doing this. “You as well.” He scrambled for something to talk about. He’d never been in a position like this, but there was one thing he could say. “Katherine will be thrilled you’re here.”

“We’re excited too.” Frida bounced, peering around Nex. “Lucky there are three seats in front of you, so we can all be close.”

“Lucky, huh?” Marcus sniggered and nudged Nex while Frida and her parents moved to the row in front of the demons. “This is as close as you’re getting to meeting the parents. Don’t fuck it up.”

“Your chair.” Nex growled. “On fire. Shut the fuck up.”

“Are these your friends?” Frida leaned over the back of her chair, surveying the group of demons occupying the entire row.

Nex kept the groan internal and nodded. “That’s Marcus, Lucian, Arda, Armand . . . It keeps going. I wouldn’t worry about it.”

Frida’s eyebrows shot up. “Wow. It’s so nice they all came to support Kat.” Her gaze slid to Lucian, and she bit her lip. “Hi.”

Lucian blinked, also needing a prod from Marcus. “Hello.”

Fucking hell, is Lucian blushing?Marcus asked Nex.

I think he is.Nex smirked.

Despite finding Frida pretty, Lucian avoided her gaze. He was on the shy side and not used to getting attention when with Marcus and Nex.

The second Lucian began talking to someone else, Frida leaned over the seat farther. “Hey,” she whispered to Nex. “Is your friend single?”

Don’t you fucking dare,Lucian warned.Tell her I’m taken.

That would be a lie, Lucian.“He’s absolutely single.” Nex’s smile wasn’t forced anymore. “He’s shy, but don’t let that stop you. You’re exactly his type.”

What is wrong with you?Lucian snapped.

Frida smiled and glanced at Lucian one more time before the lights dimmed. The director came out, and she sunk back in her seat. Nex stifled a laugh and ignored Lucian’s piercing glare.

Normally, Nex got bored easily. He didn’t get bored watching Katherine perform. She conquered her shyness and glowed on stage. As much as he was tense about the probability he’d have to spend the rest of the night with her family, he couldn’t help but smile at the thought of how excited she’d be. He mentally rolled his eyes at himself. Marcus wasn’t completely wrong with his earlier comment.

Given he’d have to interact with more humans afterward, he wished the play was longer. Time went by faster than he liked and left him standing in the parking lot with a horde of demons and Katherine’s family, shifting his weight. It couldn’t have been planned more poorly if it was intentional.

“She knows to meet you here?” Alice asked Nex.

Nex nodded. “It’s where we’ve been meeting since it started. Easier than meeting in the crowded lobby.”

“It’s so cute you come to all her shows,” Frida gushed. “She made you stop bringing flowers, huh?”

Nex cleared his throat and adjusted the collar of his jacket. “She said getting them every performance was excessive.”

“I think it’s freaking adorable.” Frida turned to Lucian. “What’d you think of the play, Lu?”
