Kat swallowed hard and noticed his eyes weren’t bloodred anymore. They were more amber. Not only that, jeans and a T-shirt replaced his fancy clothes.

“Um, what happened to you?”

“I took a physical form. This is taking longer than I hoped.” Nex reached past her for a wine glass. His arms came around her to pour the bottle.

Kat tried to push him back again. “You don’t need to be this close to me.”

“No.” He glowered and held up the glass of wine. “However, it annoys you, and I think I’ve earned a bit of annoying you since you refuse to send me home. Even though it’syourfault I’m here.”

“Can’t you find another way home?” She snatched the glass and moved to the couch. Plopping down, she tucked her feet in and draped a blanket from the back of the couch over herself.

“I tried.” Nex crossed his arms. “All the sources I have say it has to be you since I’m bonded with your blood.”

“What do you need me for? Go kill some rando, and leave me out of it,” she grumbled, sipping her wine.

“Ican’t,kitten. It won’t count unless you order it.”

“Stop calling me kitten.”

“Start cooperating so I can go home.”

“So, I control you?”

His jaw clenched. “I wouldn’t put it that way.”

Kat stifled a laugh. “I do, don’t I? You can’t hurt anyone unless I tell you to.”

Nex clenched and unclenched his fists, nostrils flaring. “It isn’t funny, Katherine. I’d proceed with caution if I were you.”

“Why? You can’t hurt me.” Kat shrugged, taking another sip of wine. “That would mess you up.”

Nex moved so fast Kat couldn’t comprehend how the glass of wine was no longer in her hand or the blanket over her. Those were less concerning than the fact she was lying on the couch, and Nex was on top of her.

“Don’t piss me off, kitten. There are other ways to hurt you, and I’m very creative.” With darkened eyes, Nex slid his hands down and gripped her hips.

“You wouldn’t.” Kat breathed, her voice shaky as he settled between her legs. “You can’t. That has to count as hurting me.”

“Not if you want it.” Nex’s upturned lips hinted at a dark seduction Kat couldn’t believe she was intrigued by. “And believe me, kitten, I knowallthe ways to seduce someone. Even someone as uptight as you. Even a virgin. You think I haven’t noticed how you respond to me? I could have you begging for it in a few minutes, and I wonder how you’d feel after giving your virginity to a demon.” He skimmed his nose along her neck. “So watch it.”

As fast as he was on her, he was off, standing next to the TV with his lip curled back.

“You’re a jerk.” Kat sat up and grabbed the blanket with unsteady hands.

“Call me what you want. I just want to go home.” He tapped his fingers against his bicep. “I’ll make it easy. We’ll find out where they do capital punishment, and you can pick someone who’s going to die anyway. Easy. No blood on your hands.”

“But it would be blood on my hands,” Kat argued. “Me telling you to kill anyone would put blood on my hands.”

“They’re going to die anyway!”

“I don’t believe in capital punishment.” Kat reached for the remote.

“You don’t . . .” Nex growled and paced. “Of all the fucking humans, I get this littleangel,” he spat. “Most of the population of this despicable realm would have more than one name to give, and you can’t come up withone?”

Kat turned on the TV. “I don’t like using violence to solve things.”

“Get used to it.” Nex balled his fists. “Using violence as power is part of this world. Plenty of people use violence as power.”

“And I’d be as bad as the rest of them if I did this. Change has to happen with yourself first, then the world.”
