“You’re fucking unbelievable.” He stomped back and forth. “Humans are violent by nature! Where’s your violence?”
“I don’t have any.” Kat shrugged. “Look, I work at a bookstore, and we have a lot of older books. Tomorrow afternoon on my shift, I’ll find some books and see if I can find a way to undo this and get you home to your puppies.”
“They’re not puppie—” Nex gritted his teeth. “I’ve already looked for ways. This is the only way. You have to let me kill someone.”
“No. I refuse to go to that extreme. There’s always a loophole. We just have to find it.”
Nex’s eyes bugged as he stood there, fuming. He unplugged the TV before storming out the door.
Kat flinched when the door slammed shut. He scared her, but knowing he couldn’t hurt her or anyone else put her mind at ease enough she relaxed with her wine.
Chapter 5
Church
Kat’salarmblared, andshe groaned in protest, burying her face in a pillow. She reached blindly to shut it off, but a crash made her head snap up.
Her alarm was crushed, and a hand slowly moved away from it. Not her hand. With wide eyes, she squeaked, jumped back, and fell out of bed. She landed on her butt, dragging the blankets with her.
Nex grumbled and extended his hand to find a blanket, but they were all on the floor with Kat. He glared over the edge of the bed. “What the hell, kitten? Don’t be a blanket hog.”
Kat leapt up, clutching the blankets. She’d changed into a tank top and shorts before bed because wine made her too hot to sleep in layers. Not only that, but Nex was also barely dressed, only wearing boxers. He was sculpted, his body all hard lines and ridges that led her eyes lower. Now was not the time to notice.
She blinked, then scowled. “What are you doing in my bed?”
“Until you send me home, this isourbed.” Nex propped himself up on his elbow. “I don’t have anywhere else to go. So, you better come up with a name, or you’ll be sleeping with me every night. I’ll warn you right now, I sometimes get affectionate in my sleep.” A mischievous smile spread over his face. “Drop the blankets, kitten. It’s not as if you’re naked, and I already saw you when I snuck in.”
“You’re horrible!” Kat kept the blankets around her as she stomped to her closet.
“Not sure why that’s a surprise. I am a demon. Why are you up so early anyway?” Nex tucked his hands behind his head and lounged back on the bed. “Don’t humans sleep in on weekends?”
“None of your business.” Kat grabbed a dress from the closet before going to her dresser and carefully pulling out underwear so he wouldn’t see.
“Don’t bother hiding the underwear. I already went through it, and there’s nothing impressive in there. You should consider getting some lingerie. You have a nice body.”
“You’re disgusting.” Kat whirled around to glare at him. “Don’t go through my things!”
“I had to.” Nex shrugged and sat up. “I had to find space to move in my clothes since I don’t know how long I’ll be stuck here, thanks to you.”
He was trying to get a rise out of her, frustrate her enough to give in. Refusing to give him the benefit, she went into the bathroom without another word.
As she undressed, she considered he might come in while she showered to fluster her. She bit her lip, skipped the shower, and got ready quickly. There was nothing to do about the mess that was her hair, so she put it in a bun.
When she came out, he was going through her closet. She glowered and tried not to touch him as she found flats to wear with her dress.
“This wardrobe looks like it belongs to a forty-year-old woman with too many cats whose husband is a minister. If she even has a husband because she dresses likethis.” Nex’s nose crinkled. “How do you plan to get Blondie’s attention wearing clothes like these?”
Ignoring him, Kat slipped her shoes on and snatched a jacket. She went to the kitchen, started the kettle, and opened the fridge for yogurt but frowned at the contents. There was a case of beer, a bottle of whiskey, a bottle of vodka, and sodas. She opened the freezer, finding stacks of frozen pizzas, egg rolls, taquitos, and other junk food. On the counter were boxes of Pop-Tarts, bags of candy, and chips.
Kat slammed the freezer shut and spoke through gritted teeth. “Nex.”
Somehow, he was on the other side of the fridge. “You called, roomie?” Nex smirked, leaning against the fridge.
“What’s all this?” She gestured to the counter.
“Food. You hardly had any.” Nex plucked a Pop-Tart from the box. “Everything you have is so . . . healthy. Don’t you enjoy life?”
“I enjoy life.” Kat opened the fridge again and moved his garbage aside to get to her yogurt. “There’s nothing wrong with being healthy.”
