A child across the street ran straight into oncoming traffic. The cars didn’t slow. Kat’s eyes bulged, and she rushed into the busy street. She pushed the child out of the way and almost got hit by a speeding sedan. The car’s side-view mirror smacked into her hand. She hissed, a bite of pain passing through her hand before numbness took over.
Nex was at her side in a moment, taking her injured hand. “Katherine, what the hell were you doing?”
“The little boy was about to be hit.” She searched for him, but he was gone.
“What little boy?”
“I—” Kat spun around. “He was here a second ago. He was right here.”
“Katherine.” Nex’s brows furrowed. “There was no child.”
“There was. I saw him. I felt him when I pushed him out of the way.”
Nex surveyed her, then glanced around. There was no one nearby, not even an adult, let alone a child. No one was out walking in this cold with the snow piled up.
Sometimes Kat hallucinated around cars, a problem since the accident, but the boy was solid against her hands when she pushed him to safety. “I’m not crazy.”
Nex’s expression softened. “I don’t think you are. Give me your hand.”
He took her hand, but there was no mark or redness.
Kat sucked in a breath. “The car hit my hand.” She turned her palm up, but there was nothing. The pain was gone.
“It did.” Nex examined her again, fingers tracing her palm.
The action reminded her of the strange man. She drew in her lower lip. “Nex?”
“What?”
“The man who came in.”
His eyes snapped to hers. “Yes?”
“Before he kissed my hand, he picked it up,” she took Nex’s hand and turned it over, “and stared at my palm for a while, touching me like this.” She ran her fingers over Nex the same way the customer had to her.
Nex narrowed his eyes. “He did what?”
“He stared and ran his fingers over it.” The intense glint in Nex’s eyes made her chest clench. “What’s wrong? Does that mean something?”
Nex pressed a kiss to her palm. “It means nothing, Katherine. Just sounds creepy. Like you said.” He wrapped his arm around her waist and tugged her with him down the sidewalk. “Let’s get home.”
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” Nex swallowed. “I want to get you home.” He kissed the side of her head and glanced around, keeping her tucked in at his side.
Closer than usual.

Exception
Nexpacedinfrontof the couch where Lucian and Marcus sat, frowns on all their faces. Marcus opened his mouth a couple of times but closed it again and stroked his beard.
Lucian leaned forward, elbows on his knees, fingers steepled against his lips. “It was probably nothing. There are plenty of strange people in the world. Maybe he took a liking to her and wanted her to remember him. Maybe he’s planning on going back to ask her out.”
“What about the child?” Nex asked. “And her hand?”
“She told us she sometimes sees things since her parents’ accident, remember?” Marcus said. “Especially around cars. You know she freaks out around cars.”
