Nex sighed. “I know, but her hand.”
“It was probably more the shock of it.” Lucian tapped his fingers against his chin. “You said it barely touched her, didn’t you? The pain might have been in her head. Again, we’re dealing with the car issue.”
All that was true, but something didn’t sit well with Nex. Most palm readers were full of shit, but the art wasn’t a complete lie. Hands were special. A lot could be learned from a person’s hands. Nex didn’t know exactly how to read palms, only the basics. He couldn’t read into the soul like others could.Too coincidental.“If you hear anything or notice any unnatural people enter this realm, tell me right away.”
Lucian nodded. “We will. Relax, Nex. I’m sure you’re on edge because of what happened with Lilith. Who’s still occupied in the underworld, by the way.”
“Right.” He wasn’t convinced, but he had no evidence of anything else.
The front door opened, and Kat walked in, brushing snow off her hair.
Nex strode over to her. “What are you doing here? It’s early.”
“Choir got canceled because of this blizzard.” Kat shrugged off her coat and rubbed her arms. “Man, it’s cold out there.”
“Katherine.” Nex’s stern tone made her eyebrows raise. “You’re supposed to let me walk you home, so you’re not alone. Why didn’t you call me?”
“I didn’t walk home alone. I walked with Annabelle.” She gestured toward her neighbor’s house. “I don’t want to put you out every time I need to get somewhere.”
“You aren’t putting me out. Next time, donotwalk alone.”
“I wasn’t alone. What’s gotten into you?” Kat huffed. “You’re hungry, aren’t you? You’re always crabby when you’re hungry.”
Marcus grinned. “She has a point.”
“Oh, hi guys.” She waved and smiled. “I’m freezing. I’m going to take a hot shower to warm up. Are you staying for dinner?”
“No.” Lucian rose from the couch. “Just stopping by.”
“Are you sure?” Kat asked. “The weather’s crazy. I can set you up to stay the night.”
Lucian smiled but shook his head. “No, thank you. We move fast, and besides, we have a common mission tonight.”
“Oh, okay.” Kat rubbed her hands together to warm them. “Stay safe.”
Nex rolled his eyes, but her comment made Lucian and Marcus grin. They’d never been treated well by humans until her. They said goodbye, and as soon as they were out the door, Nex pulled Kat into a kiss and lifted her.
She squeaked in surprise and wrapped her legs around his waist. “What are you doing?” She breathed against his lips.
“I thought you wanted to warm up.” He sucked her lower lip into his mouth and bit down. “You didn’t think I’d let you do that alone, did you?”
Kat dropped her head in his neck to hide the smile. Nex chuckled and held her with one hand, tugging on her shirt with the other. “Clothes off, Katherine. I’m anxious to be inside you.”
“Why are you so persistent about me not walking alone?” She lifted her head to peek at him. “Is something wrong?”
Nex paused. As a demon, lying came easy. Not around her. He couldn’t bring himself to tell her what Death said, the rules they were breaking, the concerns he had. She’s already going through so much.He didn’t want his time with her to end, and she had enough on her mind with Christmas passing. “I want you to be safe. Ineedyou to be safe, Katherine. For me. I need you to not walk alone. Is that too much to ask?”
Kat tilted her head. “I guess not.”
“Good. Then don’t walk alone.”
“I wasn’t alone.”
“Keep it that way.” He grabbed the back of her head and kissed her as he walked them to the bathroom.
Their shower went so long that the hot water ran out. Between the shower and Nex pressing her into the wall and thrusting into her, Kat more than warmed up. Still, she bundled up afterward and dropped a blanket over them as they lay on the couch. Nex ran his fingers through her damp hair,Dead Poets Societyplaying on the television.
“This movie is depressing.” Nex made a face. “Why do you like it?”
