“Me?”
“Yes, you. But maybe call the doctor so he can walk you through it, because here comes another… ohhhhh.” He clutched his stomach again.
The motion reminded me I still hadn’t called the doctor yet. I dialed with one hand as the other stroked over my mate’s hair. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he fought against the pain.
“Dr. Hepbuck. How can I help you today, Hutton?” he teased.
“Babies are coming right now. Need you to get here. And maybe talk me through what the fuck I’m supposed to do.”
He didn’t say anything at first. It was just dead silence on the other end of the line. When he finally did speak, it was to release a long line of curse words.
“Ok, ok. I’m on my way now. Should be there in five minutes max. Stay on the line with me though. He might not last that long.”
I shook my head as I put the phone on speaker. Easing it down beside my mate, I spoke loud enough to be heard.
“Got you on speaker now, doc. Tell me what to do.”
“Hey there, Ross. How you feeling?” he asked.
My mate chuckled. “As good as one can be while in labor.”
“At least you sound positive. That will bode well for this next part,” he encouraged. “Don’t you worry. I’m already on my way, and I have full faith your Alpha can handle this.”
The next several minutes went by in a blur. I followed all the instructions given to me, my focus on taking care of my mate. There was no room for panic. No time to waste.
Our first baby came right as the doctor and his nurse burst through the door. I held the tiny bundle in hand, my heart swelling with love.
“Great work, Hutton. I’ll take over from here,” he said as he gently guided me to the side.
The nurse took the baby from me, saying, “Need to get him cleaned up, Dad. I’ll have him back to you in a moment.”
It was only then that I registered I was holding a baby boy. I’d been so enamored with his little face rather than gender.
“Alright, Ross. It’s time to get the rest of these babies out,” Dr. Hepbuck said.
I stood beside my mate, hand at the ready for when he needed support. It was by and large the most amazing experience to witness. My Omega was stronger than anyone gave him credit for. There was no way I’d have been able to do what he did.
By the time it was all said and done, only half an hour has passed from the minute my mate’s water broke until the final baby was delivered. All four precious bundles rested on the freshly made bed before us, eyes blinking practically in sync.
“They’re all healthy as can be. Two boys and two girls. A good balance.” The doc chuckled at his observations.
I shook my head. “It’s all so real now. How in the world are we going to do this?”
As if the universe wanted to answer me directly, the distinct sound of Aunt Souli’s voice came from the living room. “Don’t you worry, babies! Grandma is here for you.”
My mate smiled up at me, exhaustion lining the edges of his face. “I think we’ll be just fine.”
Epilogue
Ross
I staredat the cake with worry. While everything about it was perfect—the smooth frosting, perfectly drawn on words, and delicious flavor—I hesitated to rejoice over its purpose.
Our kids were only four months old. The four tyrants—Emilie, Deston, HJ, and RJ—blew into town and took over everything. They’ve ruled our lives from the second they were born.
But now, there were more children coming. I wasn’t even sure how many yet. I only knew that I was pregnant again despite actively trying not to be.
I knew I shouldn’t have let himpull outin the shower last weekend. We’d been trying to have a quick moment of privacy while the kids napped. My mate swore he wouldn’t knot me. He also promised to keep protection in the bathroom from now on as well.
