“Wolfe? It’s us.”
“Be right down,” I answer.
“Ted and Caleb.”
Nova relaxes.
“Right. Of course.”
We head back toward the staircase, placing the gasoline cans down first and then making our way toward them.
“Who else is coming?”
“Just a couple others.”
“Got it.”
We take the few remaining steps to see them waiting pensively.
“Everything okay?” I ask.
“Everyone’s in place. I got word from Adam that they’re almost here.”
I glance at my wristwatch and see it’s a little after two in the morning.
“Time to take our places in here.”
“Ted and I will be up top.”
Nova’s eyes widen.
“How will you get down in time?” she asks.
“Don’t worry, they’ve got this,” I answer.
She looks tense at the idea of losing two people she’s come to trust as part of our inner circle.
“Okay. Be safe,” she says to them.
“You know it,” Caleb answers.
Ted nods and heads up the stairs first.
I stop Caleb.
“Getting out is the most important part. Don’t do anything stupid.”
“Worried about me?” He smirks.
“Yeah, I am.”
“Don’t worry. Save your girl first.”
Caleb heads up the stairs, leaving Nova and me alone.
“I’ll be over there, right?” she asks.
“Yeah. And remember, don’t try to be my hero, angel. I need to know you’re safe.”
