“You want me to make you a plate?” Landry asks.
“Nah, I’ll eat in a little while. I just want to sit here for a few minutes.” I smile down at the baby in my arms and can’t help but hope that one day, I’ll be snuggling my son or daughter. I can see Landry being a daddy, being his protective yet playful self. It’s a life I barely dared to dream about, and now, it’s playing out like a movie reel in my mind.
That’s my future.
That’s what I have to look forward to.
Landry makes himself a plate and comes to stand next to me. He drops a kiss on my temple, then does the same to Camden. The room is filled with love and laughter, and after this horrible day, I can’t think of a better way to end it.
“I do have one favor,” I say, and all eyes turn my way.
“What’s up?” Foster asks.
“How do you feel about helping me move all of my things?”
“Where are you moving to?”
“Here,” Landry says. “To our home. Where she belongs.”
“You know we got you,” Foster tells me.
“Yeah, I mean, you can’t depend on Landry. It’ll never get done. Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Reid asks with a mischievous grin.
“Just wait, Montgomery. You’re going to fall head over ass for a lady, and I hope she gives you hell,” Landry tells him.
Reid chuckles before turning to look at Baker and Foster. “Don’t drink the water. It’s contagious. Two down,” he says, shaking his head.
“I have a son to raise,” Baker reminds him. “Relationships are the last thing on my mind.”
“I found her once,” Foster says, surprising us all. “If drinking the water was all I had to do to bring her back, I’d never stop.”
Knox lays a hand on Foster’s shoulder. It’s a silent comfort that we’re all there for him. As far as I know, Foster never talks about this woman, and from the shocked faces, I’m pretty sure I’m right. One day, he’ll tell us. When he’s ready to talk, we’ll be here to listen.
Chapter Twenty-One
Landry
Rowan’s hand is locked in mine as we make our way into the stadium. Today is an off day, but Coach Warner and Roger Hampton, the Rampage owner, called first thing this morning and asked if Rowan and I could come in to speak with them.
We’re both quiet as we make our way to Roger’s office. Rowan has apologized countless times since we got the phone call. I don’t know how to make her understand that this isn’t on her. I thought last night I had gotten through to her, but then again, today, she’s back at it. I think she’s just worried and stressed. I also think it has a lot to do with the fact that she’s not used to having someone in her corner.
She has me now.
She has all of us, and she has nothing to be sorry for.
“He’s expecting you,” Cala, Roger’s assistant, tells us.
I nod at her and lead us to the door. I stop just outside and turn to Rowan. “Whatever happens in there, we’re in this together. You did nothing wrong, Rowan.” She worries her bottom lip, and tears fill her eyes, but she blinks them away.“We’ve got this,” I assure her, squeezing her hand before rapping my knuckles on the door and pushing inside. I don’t wait for them to invite me in. I know they’re waiting.
“Landry, Rowan, please have a seat,” Roger says.
There are three chairs in front of his desk. Coach Warner is occupying one of them. I wait for Rowan to take the middle seat before I settle in the one on the far left.
“Thanks for coming. Ms. Mills, I’d like to personally apologize to you on behalf of the Rampage organization for what happened yesterday.”
“It’s not your fault,” Rowan says, her voice small. “Chaz and I used to date.” She glances over at me, and I nod. “I left him after he put me in the hospital.”
Roger and Coach Warner both curse under their breath.
