“The suit?” Jason asked.
“So, every huge thing either of us have ever had to go do like job interviews and stuff, we have this one suit that we use. It’s got this magical material that fits us both. And it’s always done the trick.”
He nodded and kept eating. I looked at the clock.
“Shit, I need to get going. But we’ll hook up later, right?”
He nodded and stood. “Oh yeah, still three to leave work?”
I nodded and kissed him. “Yep, and I’ll text you. Want me to meet you at the club?”
“I’ll come here. Pick you up around five?”
I cocked my head to the side. “Five? You ditching work tonight, sir?”
He pulled me in but slowly leaned down as his hands softly ran up my arms. His lips finally connected with mine and sent my heard swirling.
“See you at five.” He grabbed his keys and walked out.
I took a minute to shake off the urge he left with me and get my things for work.
The day dragged by slowly, but work went smoothly. There was some brief excitement after two when Amy texted me.
Amy: I just left. Seemed to go well but I won’t know for at least a week if I get to do a second interview.
Me: That’s so long! But I bet you killed it!
Amy: I’m headed to work, see you at the club later!
Me: I don’t know if I’ll be there. Jason said he’s picking me up at five?
Amy: Well, I want breakfast again tomorrow for the inconvenience.
Me: I’ll let him know.
I really hoped she got this job. She was brilliant and it’s what she’s wanted for so long. I got a call not long after that from a number I didn’t have saved, and I couldn’t take calls in the studio. Then a minute later a call came from Jimmy’s cell. It would have to wait until I left but knowing it was Jimmy sent my pulse racing. He must have news. The voicemail alert popped up and I started biting my nails. It had to wait, but I wanted to know now.
I wrapped up the next hour and once Angie arrived for her shift, I quickly grabbed my bag and hustled out so I could check the message and get home fast. I didn’t know what Jason had up his sleeve but wanted to freshen up before he came.
I dialed into the voicemail and listened as soon as my feet hit the sidewalk.
“Hey kiddo, it’s Jimmy. We got em. He’s booked and in holding now. But he did exercise his phone call so he may be bonded out soon. Just wanted to let you know. Be safe and call me if you need to.”
I stopped on the sidewalk. Eric was arrested. But like Jimmy said, he’d probably be right back out soon. My heart was about to beat out of my chest. Someone accidently bumped into me as they walked past and that broke me from my trance.
I slowly started walking to the apartment. My mind was racing, and I couldn’t help but look at every single person on the walk home. I also kept checking over my shoulder. He’d get out and be mad. Would he try to come after me? I had given my info to Tim so he could easily get it. Plus, he mentioned knowing my building. Surely, he wouldn’t go the club, though. He had Jason arrested.
It hadn’t been long since Jimmy called so I was safe until Jason got here at five for sure. Bonding out would take at least a few hours and that’s if someone came immediately. I picked up the pace and made it home and went in, locking the door behind me.
I went to my room and browsed my closet for something cute. I still needed something that covered most of my neck. Because of Eric. My hands shook as I shifted every hanger in my closet faster and faster.
Being with Jason had been such a whirlwind that it seemed much longer than several days had passed, but in reality, it was only three days later. But those three days had made me feel completely distant from what happened. Even yesterday going through it with Jimmy, I felt so detached from it. But hearing he had been arrested somehow made it real and sucked me back into real time. I tried to shake off the bad feeling that set in and kept looking for something to wear.Deep breaths, Lucy. I did the right thing. That’s all the mattered.
Jason was at the door a few minutes before five. To be sure, I looked through the peephole then flung the door open and immediately jumped into his arms. I wrapped my arms tightly around his shoulders and dug my face into his chest. Seeing him sent a rush of emotions over me and I was shaking.
“Hey, hey, hey, what’s this?” he asked, pushing me into the apartment and closing the door.
“Um, just,” I let out a huge sigh and continued with a shaky voice, “I went to report the thing yesterday and found out a while ago that Eric was arrested.”
