She walked closer to me, and her face was inches from mine when she spoke through her teeth at me, “Why don’t you take your big dick energy and shove it all the way up your ass? I’ll never help you. Fuck off, Jason.”

She turned and casually walked back to her blonde at the bar and wrapped her arm around her.

Fuck.

She was intense. What a bust. I knew better than to push it here. I wouldn’t deal with that kind of shit at my club. I walked back to the car and drove home.

When I got inside, the phone was on the coffee table, so I swiped it up. It was dead. FUCK!

I went to plug the phone in and then sat back on the couch. Even if it wasn’t dead, I don’t know what I would say. I didn’t want to text her back. I wanted to see her.

I leaned back and turned my head to the pillow in the corner. Her scent was strong there. It was her favorite place to watch tv while I cooked. I had to see her. I had to find her. I’d go back in the morning. She couldn’t stay gone forever. I closed my eyes and fell asleep while inhaling her scent.

Chapter 26

Lucy

I pried my eyes open when the sunlight started beaming in. I looked over and had closed the blinds, but the white mini-blinds were no match for the beachside sun. I felt my phone still in my hand and the hope in me had to look. Nothing.

I leaned up and looked down at the shirt I was clutching in the other hand. Sadness washed over me, but no more tears came. I let it go and stretched my arms up over my head then twisted my back side to side. I passed out as I was last night and hadn’t even changed. I also didn’t charge my phone. I plugged it in on the nightstand then swapped my skirt for pajama pants before I walked out of the room.

Ann was already up again, whipping up another continental breakfast. I grabbed a mug for coffee, and she quickly grabbed the carafe and poured me some.

“How’d you sleep?”

I nodded and sat at the breakfast counter as the kids came running into the kitchen.

“Aunt Luce! We got ready fast today to have breakfast with you!”

I hugged them both and went to sit at the table with them as Ann brought us all plates. She eventually sat down with coffee. She never did enjoy food the way I did.

“Will you be here later?” my niece asked.

“When do you have to leave? We haven’t been able to go to the beach with you yet!” my nephew shouted at me.

The kids were both shooting questions at me so quickly I couldn’t respond.

Ann interjected, “If you get good marks at school today, we willdiscusssome beach time later today. Now go wash your hands so we can leave for school. Chop chop!”

The kids took their plates to the sink and washed their hands as Ann was clapping them along to hurry. They both hugged me again as they rushed past and grabbed their bags before the three of them went out the door.

I sat in the kitchen drinking coffee until Ann came back.

“Hey, I need to get some groceries and run a few errands. Wanna come with me or hang out?”

I thought about it but was feeling pretty introverted.

“I may take a long bath and check in with my boss in a bit,” I told her. Then I had a thought, “But, do you have any paper? I left my notebook at home.”

Ann looked up like she was recalling if she knew of any in the recesses of her mind when I saw the lightbulb go off and she shuffled upstairs. When she returned, she handed me a few pieces of loose-leaf paper.

“I overbought binder paper at the beginning of the school year. So, I just pull out a page when I need to jot things down. I found you a pen, too.” She handed me the pen and paper. “Well, help yourself to anything here and there’s some great bubble bath under the counter if you want. Do you want anything special for dinner or need anything?”

“Nope. Well, actually, can I give you some cash for some Blue Moons?” I started to stand to go grab my bag, but she waved me off.

“I got it. I haven’t had one of those in a while. Maybe I’ll cheat and order pizza later and we can do pizza and beer! I think your brother took tomorrow off since you’re here!” Ann seemed excited at the idea of pizza and beer as she grabbed her purse and trotted back out the door.

I went upstairs to grab clothes before heading to the bathroom. I looked at my phone and it wasn’t charging very well. My cord must have been going bad. I jiggled it some and the lightning bolt finally appeared, so I left it there and put the paper down before heading to the bathroom.
