“Well, now maybe you can finish it with a happy ending. I love you, Lucy.”

“Say it again,” I demanded as I wrapped my arms even tighter around him.

“I love you, Lucy. I love you.”

I pulled him to my mouth once more before I said once more, “I love you, Jason.”

The End

Epilogue

I was sitting in the office listening to demos on the desktop for potential bands for open stage night for the next month when Jason walked in and dropped a newspaper on the desk on top of the keyboard.

“What’s this? And you better be glad you didn’t delete the file I had open,” I told him.

“The story made the cover. The small little section down at the left, but it’s there.”

I grabbed the paper and looked at the bottom left corner and read the title to the small article.

“Local man who accepted plea deal in Sexual Assault case now being tried in two other surrounding counties.” The story went on to explain how Eric took a plea deal the day after jury selection started on our case because when word got out, other women came forward. He was now looking at four other cases on top of the deal he took for fifteen do ten. Amy’s dad negotiated up since he didn’t take the original deal. I felt blood rush to my face as I kept reading the story and turned to the inside page where it continued.

Jason walked around the desk and knelt beside me.

“You okay? I just figured better for me to show you now than to find out later.”

I grabbed his hand and replied, “No, I’m glad you did. I’ll be fine. It’s just hard to see it sometimes. But I feel good, too. Like I started a revolution of fed-up ladies or something. Plus, now you’re off the hook so we can finally move on.”

Jason turned the chair and pressed his head against my chest as he wrapped his arms around my waist. I ran my fingers through his hair and the emotions that had resurfaced started to slowly melt away.

After a minute or two, Jason sat up and pressed his warm lips to mine.

“I’ll let you get back to work. I’m gonna go help Jaz restock the kegs.”

I took a big refreshing breath as I watched him walk out of the office and shut the door behind him.

It had only been a few weeks since we returned from the beach together, but everything fell into place so easily once we had.

I never had to go back to court. Jason drove me home that weekend in my car and Amy came back late that Sunday before she started her new fancy gallery job. I returned to work at the station but now also handled booking talent at the club and managing the DJ and house band. I can stay behind the scenes which I found I love more than the idea of being on stage. But I also started writing again.

I lost half of the song I started for Jason, but the ending changed anyway so it worked out. In fact, the new house band was set to play the updated one later tonight.

Amy was still my roommate and bestie, but Jason knew he’s just as important as her. And after the trip to my brother’s, I had to introduce Jason to my parents because Ann told my mom the whole story. They of course loved him, and we’ve had dinner with them three times since we returned. It was sort of nice seeing my parents more. And Jason seemed to like them as well.

After listening to demos for two more hours, I was interrupted by Jaz poking her head in.

“Hey hun, the band is getting ready. Thought I’d let you know!”

“Thanks, Jaz. I’ll be right there.” I shut down the computer and locked up the office then went to the bar.

It was almost six and Amy should be here any minute, so I pulled a stool over for her and sat down to wait. Jaz brought me a Blue Moon.

“Nervous?” she asked as she pushed it across it.

I shook my head, “Naw, I told them not to announce the songwriter!” We both had a good laugh, but I get the feeling she thought I was joking. As the talent manager I can tell them what not to divulge. If it wasn’t well received, I didn’t want everyone to know it was mine.

A few minutes into my first beer, Amy came bouncing in and squeezed me from behind.

“Hey bitch, big night! Jaz, can I get one of those?” Amy yelled down the bar.
