I shook my head. “No, I don’t know. He’s really hot. But I can’t get past his attitude. I dunno.” I shook my head again, harder this time and waved my hand to wave off the thought. “The whole thing was just so weird. I was probably misreading the whole situation.” I actually wasn’t sure. Something about him last night just seemed different. Did I have a crush on him? No, this was stupid.

“Maybe you weren’t misreading it. Maybe he was giving you big dick energy vibes and you wrecked it. You’re a lousy drunk, ya know.” I threw a shirt I had in my hand at her and could have cut her with my eyes. She laughed it off, “I’m just saying, you’re nuts if you’ve seriously never figured this out.”

“You’re gay, what do you know about men and their big dick energy?” That got a chuckle from the salesclerk.

“Whatever you want to call the vibes, they’re all sexy vibes and he has had them for you, for years. You just always have your heart set on idiots.”

I couldn’t argue with her there. Sometimes I thought I purposefully chose men I knew wouldn’t last. Self-sabotage at its finest. But I was serious about music, and it required a lot of sacrifices to make it in that industry. Like singing in front of people and wearing funky outfits I usually wouldn’t.

Still, I wasn’t picking up any energy from Jason, big dick or otherwise. At least until last night and even that was a bust. We finally dropped the Jason chat and kept searching.

After four stores, nine dressing room tries, and over two hundred bucks we finally found a decent outfit for the audition and a backup. If I didn’t get this gig, I would be sick over this. Plus, I didn’t know where else I would wear these pants, and a corset of all things.

Once back at the apartment I started getting ready for the audition.

“You look h-o-t hot girl! Why have we never put you in one of these?” Amy asked as I did my catwalk around the living room before I left.

“You sure? I feel like it’s too much. Like, too much of me out there,” I said as I pointed to my pushed-up breasts. The corset was barely covering my nipples. I was generally pretty sure of myself and while I knew I was a curvy girl I was fine and happy with it. Still, this outfit hugged every single inch of what was covered and left a lotuncovered.

“Are you kidding? It’s totally lead-singer-band-girl vibes! People would pay a cover just to see you in that. You should buy fourteen corsets and wear one every day. Plus, these colors are making your blues pop.” Amy was circling like a vulture.

“I think you have big dick energy, Amy. Simmer down.” Amy let out a huge belly laugh before she came and squeezed me.

“Listen, I gotta run or I’ll be late for work. But you got this! I expect a text when you’re done. I’ll be home after my shift. I’m sorry I won’t be there!”

I squeezed her back hard trying to let some of the nerves transfer to her. The audition was in half an hour.

“Thanks, I’ll text you. And I know you’d be there if you could. Just send good vibes all afternoon. Oh, and bring home some snacks after work and I’ll catch you up!”

Amy grabbed her things and left. I took one more look in the mirror to be sure my makeup was still perfect before I did the same. I pushed my curls behind my shoulders, but then pushed them back to cover my shoulders at least. As I walked out, I noticed a light jacket hanging by the door so I grabbed it and put it on before I left.

Chapter 4

Lucy

I made it to the club and another girl was still auditioning. I walked to the bar and put my stuff down and Jaz came over.

“Hey honey, need anything?” Jaz asked.

“Um, just a water for now. And can I leave my stuff behind the bar with you?” I asked. Jaz reached over and grabbed my purse as I was taking my jacket off. Thank God it wasn’t blazing hot outside for the walk over.

“Wow, I didn’t know you had that little number on you! Where’ve you been hiding that, sis?” I laughed uncomfortably and Jaz grinned as she took my coat and put it with my bag.

I sat and sipped my water as I watched the other audition. The girl on stage was good. Really good. Once the set was over, the guys in the band spoke to her and then showed her off stage and waved me up.This was it.

I started to walk up the short stairs to the stage and the bassist reached his hand out to help me up. He was good looking and edgy. Black shaggy hair with black eyeliner and black fingernails. And the most intense smolder.Damn it, Lucy, focus.

The initial audition was sent online and they emailed me to pick up the music from the bar. They had only played here a few times and I wasn’t paying attention to them before, but up close, it was a nice view.

I made it to the microphone and the guitar player walked over and went over the song set. Before I had time to get nervous, the drummer was counting us off and the audition was underway.

It was still early but the club was technically open. The stage lights were bright, but the show lights over the dance floor weren’t going since it was early. A few servers were getting tables ready and there were some college kids near the doors with books open. I was singing my heart out and even though I never intended to sing my songs, or any songs, I didn’t think I was doing half bad. Jaz was bobbing her head, the servers were swaying as they prepped, one student was even tapping his pencil to the beat. It felt good. Powerful.

We were on the third and last song of the set and I was really into it. I turned to see the band and they seemed into it, too. The guitarist was giving me a reassuring smile, and the bassist was totally checking me out. Adrenaline shot through my veins giving me a natural high. I turned back to the floor to keep my composure and caught Jason still as a board behind the bar watching. He was probably just watching because there were no customers. When he noticed me noticing him, he grabbed a hand towel and walked to the other end of the bar. Amy had it all wrong. He was not into me. Oh well, the bassist seemed to be so even if I didn’t land this gig, maybe I could land him.

After we finished, the band came over.

“Lucy, that was pretty killer. Have you performed on stage before?” the guitarist asked.
