Mike looked down and went back to washing.
“Mom, we’re about done here. We’re gonna take off,” I said as I nudged Onyx.
We went outside to tell Dad, Uncle Len, and Aunt Belle we were leaving. “We promised some friends we’d go by for a bit, so we need to take off before it gets too late.”
Dad stood and gave us both hugs. “Thank you, girls, for helping out. Hope you both have good weeks ahead. Will we see you next weekend?”
“I think so,” I said. It was nice visiting with them so much lately. When I was going to school and working at the club, I rarely had any time and only stopped by for a few minutes here and there to let them know I was alive and well.
“Hope to see your friend back again, too.”
Mike spoke from the door. “I hope so too, sir.” When he made it to the table, he extended his hand to Dad. “Thanks for having me for dinner. You did a great job on the meat, sir.”
“Good to finally see you around again, son. Don’t be a stranger.”
Aunt Belle and Uncle Len both waved, and the kids giggled behind them, so Mike peeked around and waved. I grabbed his arm and urged him through the gate so we could leave.
Onyx spoke up as soon as I was seated in the car. “Whew. I am so glad I didn’t have that extra slice of pork. I need room to drink since we’re going out. You having any tonight?”
Mike climbed in and cranked the car. I turned and asked, “You our DD tonight?”
He grabbed my hand, pulling my knuckles to his lips. “You ladies can have some fun. I have to work tomorrow anyway, and you don’t.”
I let out a satisfied sigh as we pulled away from my parent’s house. It had all gone so well, barring Mike being scared of Dad, but some things never change.
We made it to the club in no time at all and found a parking spot close to the door. Once inside, I scanned the room and saw Lucy sitting at one of the tables, scrolling on her phone.
“Hey, you guys!” She jumped up from her seat and hugged all of us. “Jason just went to the kitchen. I got your text that y’all were on the way, so I told him to go get snacks. I’ll go grab us some drinks.”
Onyx grabbed her arm. “Allow me to assist. I need a better look at the uh, menu.”
Her fiery gaze was aimed at the bar, so we all whipped our heads around and let out a giggle. “Really, sis?
She gave me some side eye. “I know you won’t say shit sincehe’sstanding with you, but you can’t tell me for one second that specimen over there isn’t a delectable eye treat.”
I turned and looked at the bar again. Matt favored Jason a lot, and I never saw Jason that way, so I guess I just didn’t get it. “You do you. He’s super sweet and a hard worker. But he’s pretty shy. Plus, he’s younger, like twenty-two or twenty-three, I think.”
The corners of her mouth turned up. “Oh lort, fresh meat. Excuse me, I’ll be assisting Lucy with the beverages.”
I rolled my eyes as they walked over. We sat down and Mike scooted his chair as close to mine as possible. He draped his arm over my shoulder, then leaned into my ear and whispered, “I’m happy to hang out with friends, but I can’t wait to get you home.” His breath on my neck and the low timber of his voice sent goosebumps over my arms.
Jason came bursting from the kitchen. “Hey, guys.” He looked over his shoulder and once his eyes found Lucy he smiled then sat down. “How was dinner?”
Mike squeezed my hand and answered. “Good.”
“Dad had him a little tense.”
Lucy and Onyx came back, giggling. They put the drinks down and when Lucy sat, Jason grabbed her chair and yanked it to him.
Onyx took a long pull from her beer and looked back at the bar. “Y’all need to switch with me so I can keep an eye on my new boyfriend.”
I nearly spit my beer out. “Your what?” I asked. Lucy grinned at Onyx and shot her a wink.
“He doesn't know it yet, but he’s my new boyfriend.” She looked over again and licked her lips. “He’s even cuter up close.”
Jason chuckled. “Who, Matt? He’s kinda shy. I don’t know if he could handle any of you ladies.”
“Well, you can barely handle me, mister,” Lucy said as she smacked his arm playfully.
