I sighed. “Maybe I expected what I deserve.”

“Who decides that?” Val asked as she waved a spoon in the air. “It’s not up to you to decide how he feels about what you did.”

Lucy’s brows shot up and she shoved some ice cream in her mouth.

“Maybe you’re right.”

“No. I am right. You can feel bad about what you did, but you can’t tell him how to react.”

Lucy flipped open a magazine. “Who wants to talk about wedding stuff?”

Chapter 22

Mike

“Hey, man, how was your weekend?” Randy asked as he handed Lois her coffee.

I grumbled and kept typing on the tablet.

“Alrighty then.”

Lois sipped her coffee. “Lady troubles.”

My brow furrowed.

“Excuse me, partner troubles.” She winked at Randy, and he beamed back at her.

“Thanks, Lois. I think it’s okay to say lady if he’s involved with a lady. So, what’s up with Dr. Stewart, then?”

“It’s fine,” I said without looking up.

Randy wouldn’t let up. “Lois knows all. She’s never wrong. About anything. So, what’s up?”

I sighed and turned the tablet off. “She dropped a bomb on me last night. I knew there was something wrong, and I thought I wanted to know. Now I wish I didn’t.”

“Sorry, man. Anything I can do to help? I did take psych for a whole semester, ya know.”

“Randy, you stop. Now Mike, if you need anyone to talk to,Iam your gal.” She put her hand to her chest. “Randy will tell you.”

“Randy will tell Mike to not divulge any personal info to Lois unless he wants it on the electronic billboard in the lobby,” he said.

She rolled her eyes and stood, grabbing her coffee. “Mike, don’t listen to him. I never name names.”

She grinned so I gave her a wink. Once she stepped away, I started typing again but Randy came up next to me at the counter. “Seriously, you okay, man? Even when you’re quiet, you smile. Today you look like your dog ran away.”

Rubbing my hand down my face, I told him, “I dunno. It’s complicated. I’m upset, but I feel part of it’s my fault, too.”

“If you want to talk about it, I’m here. I gotta go visit my patients this morning and get labs ordered before the techs riot.” He took his tablet and gave me a pat on the back with his free hand. “Lunch later?”

“Sure.”

Randy took off and I grabbed the tablet and headed to my first patient’s room to get on with the day.

I did have lunch with him in the cafe, but it was all small talk. I wasn’t ready to tell him something that personal just yet. Although he was turning out to be a great mentor and friend.

“So, what do you do for fun besides work?” he asked as we finished our meal.

“Umm, I like to work out. And my best friend owns this club in the square. That’s about it, I guess besides…” I was going to say spend time with Jaz but that was up in the air right now.
