“Hey, stranger!”
I looked up and waved as Nikki and a familiar man walked in. She whispered something to the man, who went to the bar as she came over and took a seat with me.
“Hey, Nikki. How’s L&D been? You haven’t been around in a minute.”
“Well, I took a baby to the NICU the other day and ran into the most dashing and single doctor.” She craned her neck to see him, but he was still trying to get drinks at the bar. “So, what’s up with you? Here alone?”
“Randy was here a few minutes ago and you remember my buddy owns the place. I was about to head out. Just finishing this up.” I held my bottle up.
“How’s your beautiful lady? Is she working tonight?”
Idefinitelydidn’t feel comfortable talking to another woman about any of this, so I shifted in my chair.
Nikki’s hand landed on my arm. “I hope everything is okay.”
“Do you?” a familiar female voice asked sharply.
Shit. “Amy. How you doing?”
Amy looked Nikki up and down. “I suddenly don’t feel well. Excuse me. I have to find Val and Lucy.” She tossed her long hair over her shoulder and stormed off. She looked over once more before she barged into Lucy’s office.
Nikki stood. “I better go. I don’t know what’s going on, but I want no part of it. I came to have fun with my soon-to-be sugar daddy.”
I glanced over to see Lucy poke her head out from her office.
Could this get any worse?
I left the last bit of beer in the bottle and went to find Jason.
I scanned the club then Jason came out of the kitchen, so I waved to get his attention and met him at the bar. “Hey, man. I’m about to take off, but can you do me a favor?”
“Yeah, shoot.”
“See that woman over there?” I pointed to Nikki and luckily, she was snuggled up to her doctor friend. “She’s a nurse at the hospital. She came over while he was getting drinks and said hello. It seems like Amy and Lucy got the wrong idea about her very short visit at my table. Will you tell Lucy she’s a friend who wasn’t even here to see me but with a date?”
“Sure. But the chances of them not already calling Jaz are pretty slim, so be ready for that.”
I nodded; he was probably right. “Thanks, brother. I need to get out of here before any more misunderstandings happen.”
Jason grabbed my arm. “Hey, you going to see her?”
“I know I said I can’t lose her, but I still need to sort through my feelings. I don’t want to hurt her and it’s all still a little raw, ya know?”
He nodded and patted my shoulder, so I took off. Maybe I could still fit in a good workout before bed. I definitely needed to burn off some of these emotions.
Chapter 23
Jaz
“Moommm!” I called as I walked into the house.
“In here!” she called back from the kitchen. I walked in and went to put my arm around her waist while she stood at the stove. “Well, hey, honey. What a surprise. I made Brunswick stew with that leftover meat. It should be ready in a few. You hungry?”
“A little. I had some ice cream a while ago.”
She raised her eyebrows. “Ice cream? For lunch? I know you MDs get busy, but you need real food to fuel your body. You know that.”
Sighing, I sat at the table.
