“Ugh, I don’t have a dress coat. Why is it so cold out?” I mumbled to myself as I shoved things around the closet.
The apartment was in shambles. We ended up swapping to Onyx’s. Mike still had a long time on his lease, but we didn’t want to be stuck if we found a house we liked. Onyx only had a month left on hers and she was about to renew it when I broke the news that I was moving out. It took an act of Congress, well, Amy’s dad helping us on the side, to get the leases flipped and we helped Onyx move to his apartment and we moved upstairs.
“We’ll be inside most of the time. Just grab something that will keep you warm,” Mike said over my shoulder.
“No. I have to look nice today of all days. I know it’s a courthouse wedding but still.”
Mike walked behind me, pressing his lips under my ear. Goosebumps erupted over my shoulder and down my arm. “Does it matter?”
“Yes. Maybe Onyx has one. She’s riding with us anyway.”
He squeezed me tight and turned me in his arms. He kissed me hard and deep, making me forget what I was worried about. “The day will be perfect. Stop worrying.” He patted my ass then let me go and left the room. He looked so damn hot in that tux.
I grabbed my phone and called Onyx. She had an extra dress coat that wouldn’t look horrid over my dress. I took one last inspection. Onyx had done all of our hair earlier in the day and we all went home to get dressed. No fancy cars, no church, no big fuss. Well, at least until the “party” after which I guess could be called the reception.
Once I was convinced my makeup was perfect, I texted Onyx to meet us downstairs so we could head to the courthouse and get this show on the road.
Mike held my hand on the ride over and Onyx chatted from the back about how everyone’s hair turned out. “I really outdid myself this time. Thanks for letting me add it to my portfolio.”
I cocked a brow. “Of course, sis. You really did amazing.” I looked at the side mirror through the window to admire her work. It was a pretty updo, sleek, and not one hair out of place with a small pile of tight curls at the crown of my head.
Mike squeezed my hand. “You look perfect as usual.”
Onyx huffed. “You say that even when she’s walking around in sweats and your t-shirts.”
He smiled, eyes on the road. “That’s when she looks the sexiest.”
I laughed, but my chest filled with warmth despite the cold temps radiating through the glass. The heat was on, but I could still feel the cooler temps by the window kissing the skin on my face. “I can’t believe it got this cold so soon.”
Mike answered, “Georgia weather. I looked it up and it was like this a couple years ago in October. It had just been mild last fall and winter, so it seems odd.”
“Okay, Mr. Logical,” Onyx said from the back.
I laughed. It’s funny because it’s true. But, even with all his sound logic, I loved that man and was excited for the life we were about to begin. And even though it was mild in Georgia most of the time, he was right. We got cold spells all the time in the fall and winter. I was just irritated it got chilly today, of all days.
We arrived at the courthouse, and he opened our doors, then we all hustled inside.
“Finally! It’s not like we could do this without you!” Amy shouted.
As I made my way to her and the group, I replied, “Sorry, it got cold, and I couldn’t find a nice coat to go over my dress.”
Mike came and pulled my coat off, and Lucy squealed. “You look amazing! Do a little spin for us, c’mon.”
I rolled my eyes but spun around. “You all look amazing as well.”
Lucy waved her hand. “Thanks to Onyx. Anyone can toss a dress on, or in Amy’s case a tux.”
“I love a cute dress, but the tux seemed appropriate for me today,” Amy said as she ran her hands down the lapels.
I nodded. “It’s perfect.” I looked back and Mike and Jason were waiting patiently. “You guys ready to go?”
Jason nodded in his typical stoic manner and Mike beamed, waggling his brows. We all piled down the stairs and headed to the appropriate courtroom for nuptials.
We gathered and waited our turn in the benches. After only half an hour, we finally were called up, so we stood and approached the judge together.
The judge, a woman with blonde hair pulled into a sizable bun, looked us over with her soft blue eyes and smiled. “What a wonderful sight. You all dressed up for a small courthouse wedding.”
