I smiled. My position was one I never imagined I’d have fresh out of college. I just wish younger me had seen through Donald’s shit. “Even so, it’s not like I’m equal with him and have no stake in the company. I work for Eddie. Worked for Eddie.” I glanced over again at the door to be sure the coast was clear. “Anyway, he said he sees no issue. He acts like we can carry on business as usual at work and away from work.”

“Oh no! This hot man with lots of money likes you and wants to keep seeing you.Gosh, you have the worst lifeever.”

“Cassie. It’s not professional.”

“You and Donald were married and worked together. I don’t see a problem, either.”

“I didn’t report to him. And it sucks to be here with him still. I can avoid him a lot, but we still have to interact occasionally. What happens when this thing blows up?”

“How do you know it’ll blow up? Don’t let your shitty marriage ruin your future relationship,” Cassie said.

Moving the mouse again, I sighed. “I don’t even know what this is. But he’s so great. Take out the work stuff, though, and I’d still be scared. It’s been like three weeks since I met him, and I’m already attached. I don’t know if I can take another hit. Plus, I just got divorced. Shouldn’t I be finding myself or something?”

“You’ve been separated for six months and living apart during that time. It just became official. Next excuse.”

“It’s not an excuse.” I huffed, ruffling the hair around my face. I had been wearing it down more. Not because of Odin, but because it was cold outside, and my hair kept my ears warm.

“Aside from being scared and the work stuff, could you see yourself in a relationship with this man?” Cassie asked.

My chest clenched. “Is it crazy to say yes?”

“Crazy is subjective. The thing is, you told me after the split that you weren’t head over heels for Donnie, but you felt like it was a smart option, and you got along.”

“Donald. Don’t call him Donnie because he’s not cool enough for that.”

“Okay, douchebagwasn’t really the one, and you knew it but went with your head. And look at where that got you. Maybe trust your gut on this and see what happens.”

Sighing again, I nodded. “Maybe. Did Mom say anything about him?”

“Oh, just that he was the most gorgeous man she’d seen. Dad liked him, too. Honestly, it went over much better than I thought.”

“Yeah, he was a decoy, so I didn’t get interrogated about the divorce and dying alone.” Mission accomplished.

“It worked. They just want you to be happy. And so do I, sis.”

“Thanks, Cas. I need to run. I love you. I wish I could say I’d see you soon, but it’ll probably be Christmas.”

“Yeah, I’m busy anyway. But call or text if you need me, okay? Otherwise, I’ll see you at Mom’s Christmas Eve. I love you.”

She disconnected the call, so I started checking messages and emails. Candy and I had a brief conversation to get caught up on my schedule for the week. I was still on the line with her when there was a knock on the door.

“Come in,” I called. When I looked at who it was, I told Candy, “I need to call you back.”

Donald walked casually to my desk and sat down.

“Make yourself comfortable.”Asshole. “What can I do for you?” I asked dryly.

He smirked as he crossed one leg over the other. “I was checking out some homes this weekend, and I could swear I saw you with the new owner.”

I swallowed hard but made sure to keep a straight face. “I’m sure you were mistaken.”

“Hmm.” He nodded. “Am I? I noticed him leaving your office last week.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m sure you did. Did he not visit with you to discuss the business at all?” I looked at my screen and began typing to ignore him.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed him shift in the seat. “No. He hasn’t. In fact, he didn’t meet with Jack, either. Interesting he’d only meet with you.”

I huffed, then turned to face him. “Do you have a point, Donald? If so, please make it because I have work to do.”
