Rogers stood just as I did, getting in the middle of us. “Hey, knock it off. Nobody is making you fuck some skanks.”
“Don’t be talking about Allie,” Hammer snapped.
Putting my finger in his face, I said, “So there was something? I knew it.” Rogers tried to press us apart. “And she’s my fucking sister, so I’ll talk about her if I want to.”
The doors slammed open and Glenda shouted, “All of you shut the fuck up! You sound like a bunch of schoolgirls.” She leaned against the bar and sighed. “Thank God Linny’s outside. Anyway, if you’re gonna bicker like little bitches, I’ll go so Linny can go. Sofie can ride with me. But I want a room for me and Sofie that we don’t have to share.”
We all stared at Glenda like she grew two more heads. Hammer’s face was red, but Rogers was still playing referee. “Thank you, Glenda. We’ll see what we can do.”
“Watch your mouth,” Hammer said as he held a finger up to her.
I smacked it away. “Walk away, Glenda,” I said, scowling at Hammer.
She rolled her eyes, unbothered by us, and left.
Rogers pushed us apart. “Bama, you’re out of line. You know we gotta–”
Hammer said, “No. Forget it. You’re right. There was something.” He adjusted his cut. “But I never disrespected her. She’s not club ass.”
“No shit.”
Rogers gripped my shirt. “Pop off again and I’ll call for a vote and it won’t matter what he says.”
Hammer grabbed Rogers’ shoulder. “Stand down, Rogers. It’s okay. But don’t run your fucking mouth like that to me again, Bama, or you’ll get fined and flogged.”
I pushed Rogers and his square jaw clenched. Pulling at my cut, I said, “Yes, sir. But if she’s coming, I want to patch her in as my Ol' Lady.” There was no fucking way she’d be caught there without being claimed. My brothers wouldn’t fuck with her but we didn’t control anyone else.
A lot of clubs had codes and wouldn’t touch an Ol' Lady. I’d been wanting to do it anyway, but this would be a good reason to approach her about it.
“You got some fucking big, brass balls, Bama,” Hammer said, wiping his hand down his face. “We’ll have Church before y’all head out tonight. I’ll put it to a vote for you.”
I reached my hand out. Hammer looked down for a few beats but finally took it. I pulled him in and patted his back. “Thanks man. And my balls are made of steel, not fucking brass.”
Chapter 28
Brooklyn
After Sofie was back at school for a few days, we were packing up to go to the beach. The teachers said it would be fine for her to miss two days since she had otherwise perfect attendance so far. I also changed my hair. Bama had scheduled me for an appointment with one of the ladies that frequents the clubhouse but didn’t live there. Sassy worked in a chic salon and had beautiful, platinum hair that was straight as a board, fierce winged liner, and plush red glossy lips.
I almost chickened out but went with what I’d always wanted: a neon green bob cut with black peek-a-boo underneath.
Bama stayed at the salon as she worked. I was nervous that he wouldn’t like it, but the quickie we had before picking up Sofie proved otherwise.
We weren’t able to get me into the tattoo parlor before we left, but he scheduled me a consult a few weeks out with one of the guys from the club. It was fine. I already felt like a totally new woman. The tattoo would just be icing on the cake and it gave me something to look forward to. Plus, I had no idea what I wanted so that gave me time to make a decision.
Sofie loved my new hair and we already talked about what other colors I could do. I promised her she could get some wash out color over the summer but didn’t want to break any school rules with her having fun shades. There was vague verbiage in the policies about anything distracting, and while we had all new identities, I didn’t want to cause any issues for her at school.
I had only ridden on the Road King a few times and Bama offered to take his truck and haul the bike, but I looked up where we were going and it was only about two and half hours away. We rode longer than that the first time he took me out so I told him we could just take the bike. Plus, Glenda was driving her car and said we could toss what didn’t fit in the saddlebags in with her. Since everyone was leaving early and they rode together, Bama asked if we could stay at the clubhouse.
I liked having his place, but it was almost like starting our little vacation early. It was a hotel at some point, after all. Sofie was excited to sleep there too. She had a room she could have slept in, but she seemed wary, so Glenda offered for her to go ahead and sleep in her room with her since they were sharing all weekend anyway.
Even though Glenda wasn’t asleep, Sofie was resting in her bed after she’d played hard all day and had a full belly.
“Wanna go in there?” Bama asked, pointing to the main room. “I wanna show you something.”
“Umm, do I have to?”
He grinned. “The coast is clear. I checked. C’mon.”
