“We did,” Glenda said from the cocoon she was in on the chair in the living room. “That kid wore me out.”
“Did y’all eat?” I asked, walking to the fridge.
“Yeah, we had pizza delivered. Pinkie left a while ago with the others. They okay?”
Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, I took a huge swig. “Yeah. Allie crashed and Linny had a really good time but she’s down for the count.”
Glenda giggled. “Well, partying with that little one all day took it out of me. I’m just waiting for her to get tired.”
“Sofie, can you watch TV in the bedroom?”
“Yeah, I can do that.”
“There ya go. Go to bed.” The sun was just going down, but she could close the curtains. “I gotta go back out and find Hammer. I won’t be too late. Ollie’s out back with a couple of the guys.”
“Oh my God, we’re fine,” Glenda said as she shuffled past me, still wrapped in the blanket. “Go play. We’re good. Right, sweetie?”
Sofie hopped down from the chair she was sitting in and ran up to me. “Good night, Bama.”
“Good night, sweet girl. Night, Glenda.”
They headed upstairs, and I finished off my water and checked in with the guys on the patio. After shooting the shit with them for a few, it was getting dark, so I checked my phone.
“Alright fellas. Be back in a bit. No strange pussy here.”
“We know,” they all said in unison.
I hopped on my Harley and drove to a gas station. Standing by the bike waiting for it to fill up, a man behind me asked, “Hey, you’re Allie’s brother, right?”
Whipping around to see who it was, I looked the man up and down. He was at least a few inches shorter than me, dirty blond hair in a short style, glasses, no cut, and he was standing near a red eighties model ragtop mustang.
“Who’s asking?”
“You seen Brooklyn?”
I was used to fucked up situations and keeping my cool, but I wasn’t prepared for this here of all places. I hoped I didn’t give him any tells that he caught me. “Who?”
He walked closer, his keys in his hands, circling them over his finger. “What about Sadie?”
“Never heard of them.” The gas pump clicked, so I turned and pulled it out, recapping my tank.
“Are they safe?”
“Is who safe, man?” I asked, confusion in my voice as my hands went up.
He stepped even closer. “I know you took them, Bama. And I know your sister is a low-level dealer.”
My jaw ticked. “You don’t know shit about my sister.”
A few guys around the parking lot looked over from their bikes, and a few started walking closer.
Trying to keep it together, knowing he was a cop I said, “You need to get out of here before you get yourself into some trouble.”
“Is that a threat?” he asked, his hands going to his chest. “I’m a cop. That would be pretty stupid.”
Stepping closer to him, I said, “You’re not on duty down here, and from what I can tell, you’re all alone. Now keep my sister’s name out of your mouth and get the fuck out of here.”
He reached into his pocket, and one of the guys I recognized from earlier in the day reached to his back. I put my hand up to stop him.
