Rogers said, “Fine. That’s settled. Now, the Scorpions figured out something happened to their guys. We just don’t know how much they know.”

“Yeah, but they probably don’t know shit. Just because they were at the rally means nothing. Everyone who rides a bike in the Southeast was there,” Froggy said, waving a hand through the air.

“True. But they were probably also doing recon, just like us,” Hammer said.

“Nobody in our club is dumb enough to speak up,” Butterbean said, relaxed in his chair.

“Never count anyone out,” Leigh said. He hardly ever chimed in. But being the guy who often took care of messy situations, he’d know that.

I nodded in agreement. “My buddies back in Georgia had one of their own turn on them. Someone they never thought would. Leigh’s right. We can’t assume shit.”

All the eyes in the room started looking around. I hated to plant that seed, but after what happened to the president of DEMC a few months back, it opened my eyes. Plus, RBMC wasn’t new, but our chapter was barely a year old.

Hammer settled back into his seat. “We don’t need to be looking over our shoulders at our own,” he held up his hand before continuing, “but everyone needs to be on point and aware.” He leaned back in his chair, his fingers thrumming on the table. “Look, I’ve partied hard the last few months, probably hosted a few too many parties, and maybe invited a few too many outsiders. We were still building, but our numbers are strong now. We have some regular clients, and the money is flowing in and out as it should. Have I been the best president lately?” He shrugged. “Maybe, maybe not. But from here out, we buckle down and keep it tight.

“Breaker, do your techy magic shit and keep an eye on that cop in Georgia. And any chatter you catch about the stockyard or the Bloody Scorpions, I want to know fucking yesterday, you got me?”

Breaker nodded. “You got it, Prez.”

“Bama, you keep an eye on your kid, but y’all should sleep at the clubhouse until we know what’s what with that guy. The last thing we need is an ambush. And Allie needs to stay put, too.”

“Agreed. Let me talk to her.” Knowing finally there was something between them and clearly it didn’t end well, Alliewouldn’t love the idea of being stuck here. Especially if she didn’t know why. She wasn’t one to let things go, but me putting my foot down would be better than Hammer. She’d be pissed at me but would listen. She’d be pissed at him and likely try to deck him then leave.

“For now, business as usual, but keep your eyes peeled and your ears open. We don’t have any runs this week so we can lay low, but we need to be alert,” Hammer said.

Now I just had to swipe Allie’s keys to have her SUV checked, tell her she was staying indefinitely, and somehow keep Linny in the dark while explaining we’d be crashing here for the time being.

I’d had a lot of shit thrown at me since I joined this club, but somehow these tasks seemed monumental compared to all the others.

Chapter 35

Brooklyn

Bama was busy all day. It was still pretty warm, low eighties, with lower humidity than normal so we spent the majority of the day outside. Floating around the pool at the clubhouse and hydrating while eating snacks was just what the doctor ordered. Thankfully I had good sunglasses Bama bought for me at the bike rally.

My head stopped splitting, but I definitely still felt the effects from Friday night. I slept a lot yesterday and let Sofie chill in bed with me and watch cartoons for a while between Bama bringing me snacks.

He said since Sofie had a lot of helpers at the clubhouse and I wasn’t feeling well, we’d just hang out there, and it made sense. At home, I’d be laying in bed, and she wouldn’t have a bunch of women fawning over her. She even had her own playroom here now thanks to some of the women and Bama. He was going to surprise her later with it but with me nursing a hangover, he went ahead and showed her. She was happy as could be and I got to rest.

Bama had some club stuff happening, so he couldn’t be with us twenty-four/seven. I was fine with that anyway because I wasn’t good company at the moment. I was feeling a tad better today, but still slow going.

Note to self, don’t try to keep up with Allie.

Allie stuck around even though she told me on the ride yesterday she planned to head back. I was no expert in men or relationships, clearly, but I got the feeling there was some history with her and Hammer. Just like with Glenda, though, I didn’t want to pry. If the opportunity arose in conversation I’d take advantage, but I hadn’t found a good opening.

“Mommy, I need to pee!” Sofie called out from the other side of the pool.

Moaning, I leaned up in my float and started to paddle, but Pinkie yelled over, “Stay put momma. I need to go, too, so I’ll take her.”

“You’re an angel,” I said as loud as I could muster.

Looking down at my fingers, I was all pruned. But floating around weightlessly, occasionally dipping my hands and feet in the water, was surely helping me somehow. It was really nice anyway.

“You getting hungry?” Glenda asked from her lounge chair beside the pool.

“You guys really don’t have to baby me.”

“That’s what friends are for. You can return the favor when I get wrecked.”
