“I’m pretty sure it was a namesake. But yeah.”

“No wonder he’s grumpy.”

She cackled again, and I relaxed back into my chair while I waited around for Bama. It was sad to think she’d been an Ol' Lady, and her man was dead. Was she still considered an Ol' Lady? I was still learning so much about my new life. I wish I knew what happened to him, but the tension was palpable anytime I brought it up. So, for now, I’d move on from it, and wait for my man.

Chapter 36

Bama

It was late when I finally emerged from the office I’d been hiding in. I was hanging with Breaker and we were doing some digging but I could have gone out sooner. I had to wait though, because I needed it to be believable for us to stay. It felt shitty to keep her in the dark, but for all I knew there was nothing to tell. Well, except I met that fucker.

There’d been plenty of times we’d taken Sofie back after she conked out and gone home late. But I had a bad feeling, and for some reason, I didn’t want the girls at the house. Like I told Hammer, I’d drop Sofie off, hang around, then I’d pick her up. I’d drop her back here at the clubhouse, then run over to the house and just check on things.

I figured I’d play it off as more club business, so Linny didn’t try to go. Something about that cop going back home so fast didn’t sit right. Why drive all the way to the beach, confront me, then just leave?

Sure he was alone and seemed to have enough sense to realize he was outnumbered at the gas station. But he was still crazy enough to approach me at all. There’s no way he thought he could take me down, so the only other option is he thought since he was a cop he’d be safe enough to come over.

Honestly, I shouldn’t have hit him. He could’ve easily gone to the local cops, flashed his badge, and had them come find me, especially since we were in a gas station parking lot. I was lucky Hammer didn’t fine me because fucking with cops could cause issues for the whole club. Plus, losing my cool only told him exactly what he wanted to find out–she was with me.

Allie was pissed at everyone, me included. I’d easily swiped her keys and told her we were having her SUV tuned up and detailed, so she was stuck with us for a bit. She accused me of forcing her to talk to Hammer. So naturally, she slapped me in the face, then stormed off to a room to sulk alone. It actually worked out better than I imagined. I’d thought she’d be suspicious and ask a bunch of questions, but instead her mind went straight to Hammer. Part of me wanted to sit them both down and drill them because she was still denying all of it, and he hadn’t told me shit except it wasn’t what I thought.Like he fucking knows what I think.

He was the president, though, and we had bigger fish to fry than who was fucking my sister while I was in jail.

Well past midnight, I found Linny with Glenda watching TV at the bar. She was tired judging by the slouch to her shoulders. Her green hair was wavy and she was dressed in a t-shirt, her cut, and jean shorts with sandals on. She was expecting to go home.

They must have heard the door because they both turned back, eyes weary and a little red, either from the pool or being tired.

“Hey, I missed you,” she said as she jumped down from the stool she was on. Her arms snaked around my waist, and I closed her up in a bear hug.

It had been too long since I’d had her against me. I took a moment to soak her in, then said, “Missed you more.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, girl,” she said, turning to tap Glenda on the arm.

“Bright and early. I’m off to bed, y’all,” Glenda said.

Letting Glenda head out, I pulled Linny back to me again. There weren’t many folks hanging out and nothing wild happening.

She moaned, “Mmm, ‘bout ready to go? I miss our bed.”

Kissing her temple, I said, “I’m beat. Can we crash here?”

Nodding, but brows pinched, she answered, “Sure. Everything okay?”

“Yeah. Just some club shit.” That was true. It just happened to be club shit that involved her. But I’d told her a few times there were things she was best not knowing. That was also true. And knowing Glenda, she’d schooled her on the life, and being an Ol' Lady.

She yawned, covering her mouth, then grabbed my hand. “Well let’s go upstairs. I can barely keep my eyes open.”

Once we made it to the room, she draped her cut over the chair, kicked her sandals off, and dropped her shorts before climbing into bed. “Oh it feels good to be horizontal.”

I hung my cut up, then peeled my clothes off. “Didn’t you hang out at the pool all day?”

“Shhhh.”

Chuckling at my woman, I climbed into bed and snuggled close to her. “Hey, why don’t you sleep in a little? I got some shitto do tomorrow and it would save me time anyway to drop her off and not turn back. You planned on working right?”

“Mmhhmm. Are you sure? I still need to get up to get her ready.”

Peppering her temple and cheek with kisses, I said, “I can get her ready for school. But I’ll make sure she gives you a hug before we leave. How’s that?”
