The rest of the time, I hid in the Church room, waiting for Breaker to find a lead and Hammer to get in touch with Jameson. I had a feeling that she was at the stockyard, but I didn’t know why and had no proof.
While I waited, I called on old friends, seeing if they noticed anything at the rally or heard anything at all.
After coming up empty on the first five calls, I reached out to Jackal.
“Hey brother, how’s it going?” Jackal asked when he answered.
“Not good. Hey, when did you guys leave the rally?” I asked.
“Me and the Ol' Lady are still here. She wanted a few quiet days. Why?”
“Working a lead.” I rubbed my head, grinding my teeth. “Some shit went down. Did you by chance see the Bloody Scorpions at all over the weekend?”
“From afar. We try to steer clear. Hawk doesn’t want us starting shit with anyone since we’re still dealing with the shit with his pops.”
“I get it. We don’t instigate with them, either. But I swear they’re around just to fuck up everything.”
“Amen, brother,” Jackal agreed. “I don’t think they have any real objective other than to be a pain in our asses.”
Rubbing my face, I asked, “Maybe a longshot, but did you see a guy in a leather jacket with glasses talking to them?”
“Mmm, don’t recall that. But I did see a couple of them talking to someone in an old Mustang. One of ‘em climbed in and pulled off, the other walked away. But I didn’t see the guy.”
Sitting up straight, I smacked my hand on the table. “That’s it. I appreciate you, man. Hey, your woman is a doctor, right?”
“Yeah, why? Don’t you guys have a doc on payroll?”
“Yeah,” I said as I stood up. “But he’s tied up. Fucked up shit over here, man. Any chance she has any supplies with her?”
“We have a small kit, but she doesn’t practice that kind of medicine. And I can’t have her in danger.” A woman’s voice started talking fast, and he covered the phone, arguing.
I tried to wait until they were done but time wasn’t on my side. “Jackal! I wouldn’t ask you to put her in danger, but my Ol' Lady was taken. And I think I know where she is. If I’m right, she’ll need medical attention.”
“Say no more, brother. You should’ve led with that. I can wait nearby if you let me know when and where. I’d be there with you, but the guys are gone and I can’t trust this one not to follow me,” he said.
“Thanks, brother. She’ll be safe. I’ll send info when I have it.”
“You bet.”
Running from the room, I went to find Hammer, but he was jogging down the hall toward me. “Hey, Breaker thinks he has a lead.”
“I may have one, too. Jackal saw some Scorpions talking to her ex and took a ride with him.”
Hammer nodded. “Breaker checked traffic cams in the area around the time this all went down. There was a box truck near your house, and it had definitely been down a dirt road. He tracked them to Pensacola.”
“And there’s no red lights on that stretch of road, so he couldn’t track them all the way to the stockyard.”
“Right. Plus, Glenda woke up briefly.”
My chest tightened. “Briefly? Did she…”
He shook his head. “She’s still fighting. But Leigh said she managed to say Scorp before she conked out again. Has to be those fuckers,” he said.
I was relieved to hear Glenda was still kicking, but with all these things pointing to the Bloody Scorpions, I wanted to leave immediately. “Well, let’s go.”
He grabbed my arm. “We’re going, but we need to be smart. We gotta be sure we keep one of them alive so we can set up this cop. Jameson wants this all tied up, and if we play this right, we can put it on the Scorpions.”
“I’ll take him out, but first we gotta get her out of there.” Once I knew she was safe, I’d head to Georgia and take care of him and pin it on one of the Bloody Scorpions. But my first objective was to find her.
