“The guys are already waiting, Bama. Let’s go get your Ol' Lady.”

Chapter 41

Brooklyn

Water splashed over my body and up my nose, burning as I gagged and sucked it up accidentally.

“My God,” a familiar voice said. My blood went cold, and a shiver went down my spine.

Blinking my eyes since I couldn’t wipe them, they finally adjusted. It was darker now, but there was a small lantern hanging from one of the hooks.

“You sure do look like shit, Brooke.” Marshall crouched down in front of me, holding a large knife. Looking down, blood trickled down my bruised thighs. My shorts were cut open, still hanging on my hips, but the crotch had been cut out. That was when I got cut on my inner thigh. My body was numb, but themini-vibrations pulsed through my muscles. Soon all the pain would be rushing through me.

“I could say the same,” I said before spitting. The taste of blood was overwhelming.

“How ladylike,” he said, standing. “Green hair, trashy clothes, spitting like a man. Maybe your boyfriend did me a favor.”

“He’s not my boyfriend. He’s my Man. But you wouldn’t know anything about that.” I leaned my head back against the wall.

He came closer, leaning down, then his hand whipped through the air, the back of it connecting to my cheek with a pop.

“Like I said, you wouldn’t know anything about that.”

“You sure have grown a mouth on you.”

“It’s amazing what a real man can do for a woman’s confidence,” I said.

He stood up. “Where’s Sadie?”

I shrugged. “Probably sleeping soundly somewhere.”

He huffed. “You don’t think she’s worried about you?”

The numbness was wearing off and pain started spreading through me. All of it was familiar pain, except the little stab wound to my inner thigh. That was new and very uncomfortable.

Wincing as I tried to sit up better, I said, “Me missing will never be as traumatic as watching her father beat me, then having to see me afterward.”

He came closer again, this time his closed fist connecting to my jaw. I saw stars, but once they cleared, I spit again.

“Stop spitting, bitch!” he shouted as he backhanded me again on the other cheek.

Looking up at him, I gathered up the blood and fluid in my mouth, and did my best to really get some pressure behind it when I spat again.

He looked down at his pants, and his jaw went from side to side. “I’m done with this game.”

He walked beside me, then grabbed under my armpit, jerking me from the ground.

“What game? What was all this for, Marshall?” I asked as he tried to right me on my feet. But I didn’t make it easy for the others, so I sure as hell wasn’t going to make it easy on him.

“You’re mine. Dead or alive, Brooklyn. You belong to me.”

“And what about Sadie? Were they supposed to get her, too?”

“She’s mine, too. But these idiots can’t handle a job, so you’ll have to do for now. But don’t worry, I gave them a deposit, so they’ll make sure to get Sadie and kill your boyfriend,” he said, struggling as he dragged me.

“My man won’t let you ever touch her. And you’re the idiot if you think you can get to him.”

“Am I? He must not be too worried about you since he let you get taken. You’d think my chat with him would at least make him protect you, if he really cared like you think.”
