“Let’s hear it then,” I say. I’m still in a pissy mood after Benton disturbed us.

“First I want to hear Selena’s plan. You’ve got the documents now and the evidence you need. How were you planning on using it?” he asks.

“Well, I have this partner. Her name is Alex. We usually work together in situations like this. She’s a hacker. I guess I could have tried to get to the prosecutor and hand him the files or something. Honestly, I didn’t really think that far ahead.”

Of course she didn’t. She has a one-track mind. Take the risks now, bear the consequences later, that’s how Selena Myers operates.

“Well, that’s a terrible plan,” Thomas says bluntly. Miguel chuckles but immediately stops when Lena glares at him.

“So what do I do?” she asks.

“Thankfully, the prosecutor you mentioned happens to be a good friend of mine. I’ve already contacted him and I’ve sent him the evidence on your behalf. He assured me that he wasn’t going to lose.”

Selena nods. I can see that she’s relieved.

“I want to go. I want to see him go down with my own eyes,” she says to Thomas.

I’m quick to protest.

“You’re forgetting that he already tried to kill you. They’re probably looking for you right now. You show up anywhere near that trial and you’re dead, Lena,” I tell her.

“I still want to go,” she repeats. My jaw hardens and I glare at her. She glares right back. Why does she have to be so fucking stubborn?

“She can.” Thomas says interrupting our argument, “Ritchie already took care of her safety.”

“I made it look like Selena already left the country. I hacked into the airport system and inputted you into the database. According to the records, you already jumped borders. You took a one-way ticket to Russia. They think you’re gone,” Ritchie says.

Selena full-on grins.

“You’re definitely a better hacker than Alex, Ritchie. Just don’t tell her I said that,” she tells the man with a smile. I smile too. At least now she’s not in imminent danger.

“So I can go to the courthouse now?” she asks and I nod.

“You still need protection though,” Thomas says.

“No problem,” Lena says looking at me.

I scratch my jaw.

“I guess Benton could go with you,” I suggest. Lena recoils. I think I see hurt flash in her eyes.

“Why can’t you go?” she asks.

“I want to, Selena. But I have something I’ve got to do on the day of the trial. It’s really important. There’s a client that needs my help,” I tell her, hoping she understands.

This particular client is a pregnant woman who was regularly abused by her husband. Her husband is a high-ranking officer in the police force so of course nothing could be done to him. Which is why she came to us. It took me a long time to earn her trust and now I have to escort her out of the country. It has to be me. She doesn’t trust anyone else and I’m scared she might go back to her bastard of a husband.

“Okay, “Selena says nodding her head. She looks like she’s about to cry. Fuck, I messed up again. Even Miguel looks disappointed in me.

______

It’s always a bitter pill to swallow when the man you’re in love with doesn’t think you’re his number one priority. Two days ago, I asked Joseph to accompany me to D.C. where I would be attending the trial of someone I despise. Joseph refused. His excuse, work. I honestly thought after that talk we had, he would change but I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part.

I haven’t talked to him since then. He can’t keep doing this to me. I can’t keep letting him in only for him to choose work over me. He should know. I shouldn’t have to tell him that I want him there with me because he makes me feel safe. Because I know he would never let anything bad happen to me. But, it’s like he doesn’t get it.
