She frowns.
“I told you that. I also said there was no need to go and confirm but you didn’t trust me. It’s not like I would lie about her being my friend,” she says in frustration. I shrug.
“I was just making sure.”
“How do you know Selena anyway?”
“She’s...” I hesitate because I really don’t know how to explain.
“I’ll just ask her myself,” Alex says before walking away and heading into the hospital room. I can only hope Joseph’s dick isn’t out anymore. I snicker to myself. Today has been nothing but eventful.
I can’t help feeling that my life is about to get extremely complicated. Selena and Alex know each other. Selena can’t seem to ever stay out of trouble, which means Alex will be worse. I haven’t seen her in more than 15 years but I think she’s about to rock my world. And not in a good way.
I leave the hospital and head back to the Reagents headquarters, which is a huge mansion with every state-of-the-art equipment we could need, as well as security that’s tighter than Fort Knox. Security that I created.
“How’s Joseph?” a gruff voice asks from behind me.
I turn around and look at Thomas. He’s the leader of our team, The Reagents. We’re a protection agency that specializes in cases where people are in danger but can’t turn to law enforcement. Thomas started the agency and he’s the one who provides most of the funding.
I’m surprised to see him looking so laid-back. He’s on the couch with a beer in his hand and his feet on the table. Usually, Thomas is on the phone, making calls. He’s always busy.
“He’s perfectly okay,” I tell my team leader. I wince as the image of Joseph’s dick comes to mind. Thomas narrows his eyes.
“What?” he asks.
“Nothing,” I tell him.
Even if I wanted to tell him, I couldn’t. I’m not really close to any of them. They might think it’s because I’m much younger than them, but I’m generally closed off. I’m not a big fan of people, give me a computer though, and I’m okay.
“Alright.” He says and I take that as my dismissal. I walk up the stairs to a room that I’ve come to refer to as mine. Most of us have our personal houses but we might as well be living here. It’s comfortable and safe. I lie down on the king-sized bed in the room for a short nap.
When my eyes open, I feel like it’s only been a few minutes but the darkness outside confirms that I’ve been asleep for most of the evening. Rubbing my eyes, I grab my phone that’s ringing from the bedside table.
“Joseph,” I say upon answering.
“I’ve called you four times and we knocked on your door but you didn’t answer. Guess you were asleep,” he says bypassing a hello. I sit up straighter on the bed.
They should be used to it by now. I sleep terribly at night, so I only ever get to sleep during the day. And when I do, I sleep like the dead, with my door locked.
“Sorry, what’s wrong?”
“We have a meeting, it started 15 minutes ago. Get your ass down here.”
“Okay, okay. Wait,’ I say remembering something.
“Aren’t you supposed to be at the hospital?” I ask.
“I got discharged, I’m all better now,” he answers.
“Okay,” I say. I should have known he wouldn’t stay at the hospital for longer than 3 days.
“I’ll be down in a minute,” I tell him before hanging up.
I head into the bathroom and splash some water on my face before heading downstairs. I walk into the room that we use for meetings. It looks like a conference room, with a round table in the center and chairs surrounding it.
They’re all there, Miguel, Thomas, Benton, Joseph, Selena, and finally, the bane of my existence, Alexandra Hale. She looks displeased to see me, her mouth is downturned in a frown and her eyes flash with irritation.
“What did I do now?” I ask, taking a seat close to her. I don’t know why but I guess we’re like magnets, we clash and repel each other, yet we can’t stay away from each other. 15 years and she’s back in my orbit, it has to mean something.
