Brody
Oh. Okay. If you find out anything new with mom—I don’t care about Mercury—let me know.
I roll my eyes. He’s never understood my interest in astrology. Not that he’s tried. But whatever. I still love him. Besides, I’m sure he has enough on his plate right now with Daphne about ready to pop out baby number two.
Okay. If anyone discovers anything, please let the rest of us know so that we can stop worrying.
Brody sends a thumbs-up emoji.
Sadie hearts my last message. Apparently, they are both busy doing other things and don’t have the time to worry about OUR mom. But that’s fine. That’s why I still live at home, right? To help my mom out and to be there when she needs support. I can be her support in whatever is going on with her.
I turn on the car and pull out of the parking lot.
My phone chimes, and I glance over, expecting to see a message from Sadie. But it’s from Keaton instead.
Yes, please.
My stomach does this flippy-floppy thing that I can’t quite explain. This is not a reaction one gets when hearing from a friend.
Keaton
Hey, what’s up?
I use voice-to-text.
“Not much. I was just leaving the grocery store.”
The mechanical voice reads it back to me. “Do you want to send it?”
“Yes,” I reply.
Keaton
Oooh. Sounds like you have a big night planned.
“Would you like to reply?” she asks.
“Yes,” I say.
“What would you like to say to Keaton Barrington?”
Oh, my heck. This conversation could take FOREVER if I do it this way. I pull into the nearest gas station and park my car. Pulling my phone out of the charger, I type out my text.
Do I sound lame if I say yes?
Dots appear on the screen and then disappear. Then they appear again but disappear just as quickly. Finally.
Keaton
Will you think badly of me if I say yes?
I laugh out loud. No wonder his dots kept disappearing. I’d guess he was trying to decide if we knew each other well enough to say that. But I think after holding hands on our hike last night that we are. It looks like Keaton thinks so, too.
Rude…
Keaton
Sorry. I don’t think you’re lame. Especially if this is one of your only nights off, and I kept you out past grocery shoppinghours.
