“Forget what, love?” He asked, worry evident in his voice as he brought a hand up and pushed some of her hair behind her ear.
“Everything,” she whispered, a lone tear finding its way down her cheek.
He brushed the tear away before placing a gentle kiss to her cheek in its wake. “You can’t run away from your feelings forever, Elli. You know that.”
“I know,” she told him, swallowing the lump in her throat. “Doesn’t mean I can’t try.”
“Talk to me,” he said softly, cupping her face in his hands as more tears escaped her eyes. “Please, baby, talk to me.”
She shook her head, the tears falling in quicker succession. “Please, Coop. I need you.”
“You have me,” he told her firmly, tilting her head up slightly and her eyes opened to stare into his. “I’m not going anywhere, okay? I’m right here. I won’t ever leave you, that I promise. I will be here for as long as you let me, and even long after that.”
She pushed herself up on her tiptoes to kiss him again, and this time he allowed it, kissing her back as his hands stayed on her face. It was a slow kiss, one where all of their feelings that they were too afraid to verbalize poured through.
Where the words couldn’t be spoken, the actions could.
“Sex won’t make you feel better, baby,” he said once he broke off the kiss, resting their foreheads against one another. “I know now isn’t the time, but you should really consider talking to someone, love.”
“I’m talking to you,” she told him, her tears now falling slower. “You’re all I need.”
He couldn’t help it as he chuckled softly. “I’m flattered, but I’m not enough, Elli. I’m worried about you.”
“You are enough,” she uttered, the words tumbling out before she could stop them—her heart overpowering her mind. “Now please, just fuck me.”
“Elliott—”
She closed the distance between them, pressing their lips together briefly to shut him up. “Please, Cooper. Please.”
He studied her for a moment, fighting with himself over what he should do. On the one hand, he knew that she needed something more, something or someone to really help her break down all the walls she had built around herself and help her overcome whatever it was that had made her who she is now.
On the other hand, he didn’t want to say no to her. She was hurting, she was desperate, and she needed him. He knew that sex wasn’t the answer, but she wouldn’t find a permanent fix any time soon. He wanted to ease her pain, wanted to make her feel better.
And if sex was the way to do that for her in this moment, he couldn’t say no.
He’d burn down the entire world if she asked him to.
Cooper slammed their lips together, catching her by surprise, but she kissed him back just as eagerly. She was grabbing at his shirt, and he at hers—the two of them desperate to get as close to one another as possible.
They both pulled away at the same time, hastily stripping out of their pants. They left them on the floor, colliding together once more. He cupped the back of her thighs and lifted her up, her legs immediately wrapping around his waist. He pushed her against the door of the dressing room, using one hand to pull himself free of his boxers before pushing her panties over to the side.
The two of them moaned as he slid inside her, her arms wrapped around his neck and her hands in his hair as he gripped her muscular thighs, thrusting into her with quick movements. He reconnected their lips, silencing her moans so no one outside of the room could hear them.
It was a quick fuck, one where she allowed herself to think of nothing else but the man before her, nothing but the way he made her feel, the way he took care of and cared for her. She knew he was crazy about her, but she knew he needed her just as much as she needed him.
No matter how much that thought scared her.
As she reached her climax, he thought about how worried he was for her, and how curious he was about her. The three months they had spent as friends with benefits provided a lot of insight into who she was as a person—but he was also realizing he didn’t really know anything about her. He knew who she was now, who the woman he cherished had become.
But he had no idea how the woman he was falling in love with had gotten here. And he wanted to. Needed to.
Kara had told him that this was a bigger step than learning her past, that her letting him in was all he needed to know that he had her, to know that she was just as crazy about him as he was for her. But that wasn’t enough for him. He needed to know who she was before, needed to know how her life had been. There were too many differences between them for it not to worry him—but he didn’t want to lose her.
That thought alone scared him more than anything else.
She threw her head back as her orgasm tore through her, and he dropped his face to her neck to leave light kisses there. He had slowed his pace before stopping completely, the two of them staying in that position as they caught their breath.
Elliott looked down at Cooper, her blue eyes staring into his brown ones. They didn’t say a word, but they didn’t need to. It seemed as if this was something they had mastered—the silent conversations. The ones where nothing needed to be said because a look was all it took for them to know.
