"I will." His hand remained on my face. "Horus will stay here. Think of him as me in bird form."
"He's not going with you?"
"Not this time. We need him to keep an eye on things here."
"What do you mean?"
His eyes flicked up to Reaper, who appeared to have found some coffee after all and was coming toward us with his own plate of food.
"I should get going. Take care, Mari. Iāā His eyes flickered down, the bashful one for once. "I'll be thinking of you."
He dropped a kiss to my forehead and was gone, booted feet stomping across the floor to the garage in the next moment.
"So." Reaper dropped his plate with a loud clatter next to mine, clearly still in a bad mood. "We're stuck with you now, are we?"
He was talking to Horus, who replied with a high-pitched screech and a beat of his wings.
"Great. Thanks for the fucking feather in my eggs, bird.ā
I hid my chuckle behind a sip of coffee. "What did Gunner mean, that Horus is going to keep an eye on things?"
He stabbed the feathered chunk of scrambled eggs and dropped it onto a napkin before answering. "Horus is a bird of prey. They have binocular vision and can see fine details from hundreds of yards away."
"Okay...?"
"And what he sees, Gunner sees."
"Come again?"
Reaper grinned deviously. "I thought you needed time off from me, sugar."
"Stop." I smacked his hand that began creeping up my thigh. "What do you mean, Gunner sees what Horus sees?"
"It's like a live video feed through those webcams. You remember those?" He swiped a tortilla from the warmer nearby and proceeded to fill it with scrambled egg and potatoes.
"You're fucking with me, right?" I stared blankly as he made a breakfast taco.
"No, I'm not." He dumped hot sauce into his taco and took a big bite.
"Reaper, this is like what I was saying earlier," I lowered my voice to a whisper, although I wasn't sure why. "That's not possible. It's completely and absolutelyim-possible."
"Clearly not, miss fancy degree."
"Do you and Hades have that same kind of...thing?"
He chewed methodically before swallowing his food. "No. We have a bond, but I can't see through him like Gunner does with Horus."
"Reaper." My mind spun at a rate I couldn't keep up with. I felt like my head was going to implode on itself. "You realize this isnotnormal, right? Like, this is the most absurd shit I've ever heard of."
He laughed calmly as he made another breakfast taco. "Ain't nothing normal about the world we live in, sugar."
Eight
JANDRO
Iwatched Mari and Reaper walk in late to the dining room with curiosity. She had that beautiful post-sex glow, and he swaggered in like a peacock.
And with good reason. He was the only Demon getting laid out here.
